Sattu-Nimboo Sharbat/ Roasted Chana- Lemon Juice.

“Sattu-Nimboo Sharbat/ Roasted Chana- Lemon Juice” … here is a delightful summer drink with excellent cooling properties that originated from Bihar, though it is now popular across the country and has its own variations state wise. This is a rural drink basically made with “Sattu” a flour obtained from roasted Black Chana (Whole Bengal Gram) along with other condiments. It is an excellent energetic drink full of nutrients, fiber, protein and is a brilliant summer cooler to be had when you feel fatigued and exhausted due to excessive sweating … There are many ways in which you can use sattu, both as a drink and in preparing of various other dishes too … today I prepared simple sharbat with jaggery and trust me I am all recharged from this killing Mumbai heat … Yummilicious ...

** Sattu ka atta ie roasted chana (whole bengal gram) is easily available in stores but can be also prepared at home in our own mixer grinder. I came to know about the benefits of this flour only in the last decade or so when browsing through net. I was intrigued and went through the search and found many ways in which this flour was used. We always stocked on roasted chana which again is available freshly done in certain stores in Mumbai, which sells exclusively such products and as hubby lowed munching on it, it was always purchased, but I never knew about the flour. Actually we should be thankful for this storehouse of knowledge called Google, I have often found sattu ka atta packets on the shelf of the stores but never knew it was roasted gram flour. There is so much to learn that one always finds shortage of time.

** Well, I will be adding many more dishes using sattu and before you wonder why is this one my first post, frankly I had completely forgotten about it till this world crisis cropped about. Home bound I am browsing through my books and diaries and came across a few of these I had prepared decades back. Though I did not have Sattu atta at home, I did have roasted grams, I just removed the skin and put a handful in mixer grinder and ground it to a fine powder and used it to prepare the sharbat/ lime juice. Truly a energizer for sure, as I am really feeling good after having it and now I must try out the other dishes too, but that will take time as at present for a week or so all grocery stores and shut down due to lock-down in my area. So everything now depends on country situation.

** Here is my simple recipe for “Sattu-Nimboo Sharbat/ Roasted Chana- Lemon Juice” … My Style …

** Remove the outer skin and add ½ cup of roasted black chana into a mixer grinder and grind to a very fine powder. This powder/flour is called Sattu ka atta.

** In a bowl add in about 50-75 gms of grated jaggery (gud/goda) and 3-4 cups of water and mix well, till the jaggery is completely melted.

** Now add in the prepared sattu powder, ½ tsp of kala namak or ordinary salt, large pinch of cardamom (ellaichi) powder and mix well.

** Add in freshly squeezed juice of 2 lemons (nimboo/ limbiyo) and mix well. Sieve through a fine sieve into another clean vessel and put it in fridge to get chilled for an hour or so.

** “Sattu-Nimboo Sharbat/ Roasted Chana- Lemon Juice” is done and ready to be served. Once again mix well and serve this cold in glasses with a stirrer or spoon as sattu powder tends to settle down. Enjoy this energetic drink during summer with your family and build up on healthier options for you and your family always.

** Note : If you have "Sattu ka Atta" at home or if it is easily available in nearby stores in your vicinity or again if you do not want to prepare the same at home you can use the purchased atta/ powder too.

** Note : In Mumbai we get clean organic Jaggery/ Goda/ Gud that has absolutely no trace of dirt particles in it. If the one you are using is not clean, do strain it before mixing with other ingredients, which is absolutely necessary.

** Note : Addition of Jaggery/ Goda/ Gud is a healthier option than sugar, however, you may do so if desired. Also you can increase or decrease the same as per individual choice.

** There are many more “Coolants” shared in the Blog to which I am sharing a common link below, just click on it and you will find them all in a row, you can then try out that which you would like to enjoy with your family and friends …
