Digestive Kashaya/ Tea.

"Digestive Kashaya/ Tea" ... simple and easy to prepare kashaya that can be had instead of tea/ coffee in the evenings as it enables digestion especially if you have had a heavy meal ... you can add on some jaggery and a dash of cardamom powder too, I haven't ... not exactly a Yummilicious drink, but you can say healthilicious ...

** Kashaya Powder is often prepared and stored in homes for easy access of preparing the same when someone in home falls ill, has cold, cough or flu etc. There are many types of Kashay powders prepared in different combinations to suit the requirements of each family and their members. I always prepare and keep some for cold and cough but this is the first time I thought of preparing some for digestive issues. I did not want to prepare in bulk before first trying it out as sometimes the powder mixture compositions do not suit ones body which then becomes a waste. So this time I prepared it instant for a few days and now that I am confident with result have decided to prepare in slightly larger quantity which I post once I do prepare and I suggest that all of you do the same too. Sharing the instant one so that you can try it out for a few days, check if it suits with your body and then continue the same.

** The ingredients are all freely available in our kitchen and personally I do not think it should cause any discomfort as such with it, but then each body is different and reacts differently, so please do not consume in large quantities. Kashayas should always be had in limited quantities and if at all you feel it is adding on more heat to your body then either discontinue or cut down on the quantity. As I have already posted a few before to which I will be sharing a common link at the bottom of this recipe, I will not run into more details about Kashaya which I am sure all of you know, if not, please browse through those posts and do try them out, but in small quantities. This one is a simple one I learnt from a close friend of mine who has been having it for years now and as I had no issue on digestion till now I had not tried it out. But recently felt the need for the same, so gave it a try and was extremely happy with results.

** Here is my simple method of preparing "Digestive Kashaya/ Tea" … My Style ….

** Add in 1 tsp each of cumin seeds (jeera), coriander seeds (kothambir/ dhania), fennel seeds (badisep/ saunf) and a pinch of carom seeds (ajwain/ vonvo) into a vessel or stoneware and slightly crush with an heavy weight or stone. You can use mortar and pestle for the same or the small stone grinders we get too as shown in picture which I used. Do not powder it, to a fine powder but just crush it well, otherwise it cannot be sieved well.

** Now add this into a stainless steel vessel along with 3-4 cups of water and boil for 15-20 minutes on medium flame. The Kashaya should always be boiled for a good time to get maximum ingredient benefits. Lastly add in a small lemon sized grated jaggery and mix well and continue to boil for another few minutes. Remove and keep this covered aside for 5 minutes and then strain through a fine sieve and serve hot with a dash of cardamom powder.

** "Digestive Kashaya/ Tea" is done and ready to be served. Serve it steaming hot say after about 2-3 hours of having your lunch. Best had as evening tea and it really does help in digestion and also helps in expelling gas from stomach. Do try this out, however be careful in extra consumption as it can sometimes cause heat in some individuals, so be extra careful with children. However in limited quantities it is quite safe to be had regularly.

** Note : Addition of Jaggery and Cardamom Powder is Optional and if you can have it without them it is better, but then many people like it slightly sweeter/ tastier and flavorful in which case the same can be added on as there is actually no harm in its addition. Personally, I have added neither and had it as it is, as I am used to tea without sugar.

** Note : It is best to have it as it is for digestive issues, however, you can add a little bit of hot milk to it while serving too if desired. Again, in that case please do not add carom seeds /ajwain while preparing the kashay as they do not combine well.

** Note : In case you do not have any heavy weight, mortar pestle or small stone grinder, not to worry, just put it in mixer grinder and using pulse mode, just pulse for a few seconds a few times till its just crushed, remove and use immediately.
