"Nag-Panchami Naivedyam Thali~ 207 : Sambarballi- Alle' (Ajwain- Ginger) Chutney, Cheppi Kheeri (Rice in Coconut Milk- Turmeric Leaves), Urad- Varai Khotto (Black Gram- Indian Barnyard Millet Idly in Jackfruit Leaves), Mooga Patrado (Green Gram- Colocasia Spirals), Pagila Podi (Spine Gourd Fries), Patholi (Sweet Dumplings in Turmeric Leaves), Batato- Bibbo Hummana (Potato- Cashew Nut Curry), SheetHa (Rice)" ... today I am really feeling so thankful to God as I thought that the tradition I was following for last 32 yrs could not be followed as till 2 days back I did not have the required ingredients to prepare these dishes ... it is true that when you have faith God get's things done "Devaru kottu padedukollutare" as is a saying in Kannada ... surprisingly got them all ... feeling so blessed and thankful ...
** Nag-Panchami as all of you know is a festival observed by almost all Hindus all over the world and I too have been doing so for two reasons. One is that I grew up seeing Mom do it and most of my methods are following her footsteps or whatever I learned about later on from relatives and friends. Though I am not into following strict rituals I am a staunch believer in God and believe that whatever offered to him/her with faith and love is accepted unlike some who insist rules and regulations on festive days. I often come across people shouting about or giving lectures on Do’s and Don’ts on this and that only when closely observed to realize that these are the very people who do exactly the opposite of it, Isn’t that funny, well if you look around there are more such people than needed, search for one and you will find thousands.
** Over the years and being married to a person who shares similar views things are always flexible in my home, I many a times cook something different while keeping a few traditional dishes intact as I always feel change is necessary and even God would love a few changes from regular naivedyam dishes. If you feel that God will be displeased if you offer him Laddoo instead of kheer you are wrong, he will definitely look at the level of your faith while accepting the same. Coming to the second reason, my birthday according to mom falls on the next day to Nag Panchami and she always wishes me on that day, so I prepare these dishes and a few others together on Nag Panchami festive day, thanking God in my little own way for all the wonderful things he has granted and guided us well through troubled times holding ours hand and guiding us.
** I have put together a few dishes that are usually prepared during Nag Panchami and one or two other dishes too that are usually prepared during other festive days. Again, the menu depends upon the availability of veggies as globally we are suffering from crisis with lock downs being imposed often and then everything is total chaos. In my area almost no veggies were available till a few days back and I always managed somehow from other sources till we were allowed to travel for business outside city, from where I could buy from villagers fresh veggies. The crisis is not over and continues to hound, so take good care of yourself and do not venture out unnecessarily unless unavoidable. Please do not forget to wear a mask when going out and keep sanitizing your hands when necessary and washing them whenever possible .... Stay Safe.
