Kalailele Tandla Bhakri/Surli Bhakri/Sweet Rice Dosa.

"Kalailele Ukdo Tandla Bhakri/ Surli Bhakri/ Sweetened Crushed Boiled Rice Dosa" ... A traditional dish prepared in GSB's homes a day prior to "Krishna Janmashtami (Birth of Lord Krishna) and eaten at night ... these are either cut into pieces and mixed with jaggery churan or prepared into small dosas and dunked in jaggery- coconut milk which then is known as Surli Bhakri ani Rosu ... there are many stories woven around this dish, but somehow I feel it tightens the stomach and gives the energy to observe fast the next day ... God Bless all ....

** Tradition has it saying that this dish known as Kalailele Ukdo Tandla Bhakri in recent days, while earlier it was known as Surli Bhakri is a sweetened crushed boiled rice dosa prepared in the eve of Krishna Janmashtami ie Birth of Lord Krishna and relished at night and then the next day a day long fast is observed and food is taken only after the Janmashtami celebrations late in the evening. I really have no idea why? Or what exactly is the purpose for this particular tradition. However, I love this dish, so do make it point to prepare it sometimes whenever possible. Being a sweet dish which is not much desired in my home, I find it difficult to prepare these dishes and it is almost over a decade since I prepared this one. I am trying to recollect as much traditional dishes as possible going through my diaries and old cookery books so that my blog is, if not fully, at least partially updated. I started blogging only with the desire to retain some of these traditional dishes and little bit of the stories attached to it, though my knowledge about the same is very limited.

** Do try out this dish whenever convenient to you, there is no need for one to wait for festivals to prepare any dish. But, it would be lovely if we could follow some traditions, so that we can pass on whatever little is left over to coming generations. Also, this is prepared with rice bhakri, a dish prepared usually for breakfast in GSB homes. So it can be prepared whenever the same is prepared for bf. All you need to do is just prepare a little bit more batter, so that you can prepare this dish. Children and older generation members are sure to love this sweet dish and yes, you can offer this as naivedyam to God too. As mentioned in title, you can prepare this slightly thicker in texture, which is known as bhakri and add it to the prepared churan ie coconut-jaggery mixture or you can prepare thinner small dosas and dunk it in jaggery-coconut milk which is known as Surli Bhakri ani Rosu.

** Both are same prepared in two different ways. Again, the preparation of the rice batter differs, from state to state, place to place, home to home. Some prepare it with red boiled rice while some prepare it with white boiled rice and then there are some who prepare it with the addition of boiled rice and normal rice. Addition of coconut while grinding to differs, some add on and some do not. Well, as I mentioned many times in my writings before, traditions always differ depending where the person settled down. Immigration of GSB’s to different places all round the world has brought about changes and adaption of method suitable to the places they now reside on. That should not deter us from preparing a dish and enjoying them. as and when desired. If we do not make a habit of eating them at least once in a few years, over the years, the same will be lost forever.

* My method of preparing Surli Bhakri/Kalailele Ukdo tandla bhakri is very simple. I have used white boiled rice along with coconut gratings while grinding as I find it otherwise going a little bit brittle. I will follow the other methods and post too, maybe for next Janmashtami or during this Diwali, depending upon the availability of time. So, do keep a keen eye on my Blog, prepare and relish these items in your kitchen with your family. There are many more festivals lined up as you all know it's Chaturmass Period. Chaturmasa is that period when though Lord Vishnu goes into sleeping mode on Sea, still the other festivals are celebrated with full pomp giving full glory to each and every God that are associated with the Lord. So, I will be trying my level best to post many more traditional dishes here as and when possible. Till then do try this one, Lord Kannaiyya is sure to be happy when he sees gleaming faces welcoming him into their homes. Stay Blessed-Spread Happiness.

** Here is my simple method of preparing "Kalailele Ukdo Tandla Bhakri/ Surli Bhakri/ Sweetened Crushed Boiled Rice Dosa" on the eve of Krishna Janmashtami … My Style ....

** Wash well and soak 4 cups of White Boiled Rice/ Ukdo tandulu for 6-8 hours or overnight in plenty of water. Drain off the water and once again wash the rice well and drain off all excess water. Now grind it to a fine rava texture in mixer grinder along with 2 cups of freshly grated Coconut/Soyi. Do not add in too much of water, just that much how much is sufficient for grinding, the batter should remain thick. Remove into a bowl, add a little bit of salt and mix well.

** Heat a iron /non stick tava and remove large sized thick bhakri/dosas, say about 1/8 inch thick in thickness and 8 inches in diameter. Fry on both the sides with little bit of ghee till done on medium flame. Remove and keep it aside to completely cool down. Once it is cool, cut it into equal sized squares with the help of the scissors, you can use knife too, but I find scissors give good cuts. Cut all the prepared bhakri and keep it ready aside.

** Note : Please use ghee while preparing the bhakri/dosa and do not use oil. Since this is a Naivedyam, jaggery-coconut sweet dish, ghee enhances the taste of the dish, while oil somehow does not taste good here.

** In a large stainless steel bowl, finely grate about 150 gms of jaggery/goda (depending upon how many bhakri pieces are there off course). Add about 2 cups of freshly grated coconut to the jaggery and mix well to prepare churan. The jaggery and the coconut should have mixed in well. Add in ½ tsp of cardamom powder and 1 tablespoon of fresh homemade cow’s ghee and mix well. Finally add in the bhakri pieces and mix well. Keep this cover for 30 minutes for the bhakri to soften a bit and it is done.

** "Kalailele Ukdo Tandla Bhakri/ Surli Bhakri/ Sweetened Crushed Boiled Rice Dosa" is done and ready to be served. I have already mentioned that this is eaten on the eve of Krishna Janmashtami, but you may do so whenever you desire too. This is not exactly a Naivedyam, but I always offer it to God before distributing it as prasadam among your family and friends. Do try this out whenever it suits you, children will definitely love it. Also it is quite filling one, I presume it is prepared to make tummy full as many of us observe fast on Ashtami day.
