Lasooni Dal Fry ...... Well i wanted to do something out of the left of fresh tender radish leaves and spring garlic. A bit hesitantly, I decided to do Dal fry out of the same and serve it with simple Jeera Rice as I did not want to spice up all dishes with too much of garam masala's. So here is a new type of Dal Fry that tastes good, but yes one should have a liking for Radish. Do try out when radish is in season as it is very good for health too.
Wash and soak 1 cup of moong dal for 10 minutes. Remove and drain well. Add the soaked and drained moong dal in pressure cooker with 2 cups of water and cook to 2 whistles. Remove and keep aside. Let the pressure drop on its own.
Pick, clean, wash and chop Radish leaves finely. You should have at least about 3 cups of the chopped leaves.
Clean wash and chop Spring garlic. You should have about ½ cup of it.
Clean, wash and chop coriander leaves. You should have about ½ cup of the chopped leaves.
Similarly clean, wash and chop finely 2 tblsp of pudina leaves.
Soak marble sized tamarind in one cup of warm water and remove its pulp. Keep this ready. You can also use 1 tsp of tamarind paste if available.
Heat 2 tblsp of oil in a thick bottomed vessel. Add the garlic and fry till brown in colour. When browned add 1 tblsp of chilli powder, ½ tsp coriander powder, ½ tsp jeera powder, pinch of haldi and fry well. Add a few curry leaves and stir for a minute. Now add in the chopped radish leaves and mix well. Add a cup of water and cook till almost done.
Now add in the cooked moong dal, tamarind paste, coriander leaves, pudina leaves and salt to taste and mix well. Add another cup of water if necessary. Do not make the Dal thin. This is a semi thick dal. The consistency should remain thick. Simmer for a good 10-15 minutes. Remove add a tablespoon of fresh homemade ghee, cover and keep aside for sometime.
The Dal fry is ready to be served. Serve hot with Simple Jeera rice. You can serve this with any rice that you wish, like ghee rice, pulav etc. You can also serve this with roti, chapati.
