Sakare Phovu / Sweet Beaten Rice / Pova Sakkre Panchkadayi.

"Sakare Phovu/ Sweet Beaten Rice/ Pova Sakkre Panchkadayi garnished with fried Cashew Nuts and Banana Slices" ... sharing my today's Tulsi Vivaha/Pooja Naivedyam with all my friends here ... Stay Blessed ... Spread Happiness ...

** Sakkare Phovu (Poha / Povu / Beaten Rice) is a dessert prepared almost in every home in southern parts of India as Naivedyam / Prasadam an offering to God on festive occasions as known as Panchakadayi / Panchakajjaya. We Konkani Sarawats prepare this on all special occasions be it festive days, children’s birthday, engagements etc. I have written a lot about the importance of this sweet phovu in our community before, so I will not keep repeating the same here. I am sharing a link at the bottom of this recipe about it in details and also a common link to all poha items so that you can go through the same in liesure and prepare that which appeals to you. This one I prepared on the occasion of Tulasi Pooja day a few days back but somehow could not get ime to blog as there are back to back festive days in this week. But this is a very easy and fast to prepare phovu and you can also put this under the bracket of panchakadayi as it does have in 5 ingredients as is the traditional requirement of panchakajjaya. Without running into much details adding let us just move on to the preparation method. Do try this out and enjoy with your family and friends.

** Here is my recipe to preparation of simple Naivedyam of "Sakare Phovu/ Sweet Beaten Rice/ Pova Sakre Panchkadayi garnished with fried Cashew Nuts and Banana Slices" …

** Pick and clean about 250 gms of thin flattened / beaten rice  ie Phovu as we call in Konkani. Also known as Pova, Poha, Avalaki elsewhere. Keep this ready aside before you start with other preparations.

** In the small container of the mixer grinder add in one full cup of freshly grated coconut along with one cup of sugar and coarsely grind the same. Do not at any point add in any water. Just keep mixing it and grind till the sugar is crushed well and mixed in well with the coconut gratings.

** Note : Here I would suggest you use the fine textured sugar instead of the thick granules ones, as it gets easily done.

** Add the coconut-sugar mixture in a wide stainless steel deep bowl. Heat 2 tblsp of fresh homemade ghee in a small pan, when it melts add in 10-12 Cashew Nuts and fry till they are browned. Remove the fried cashews and put this into the bowl in which the coconut sugar mixture is added.

** Now add in 2 tblsp of Black Sesame Seeds / Kala Til / Kalo Teelu into the same pan into the ghee and fry for a minute, remove and add it to the above coconut-sugar mixture along with the remaining ghee in the pan too. Also add in half a teaspoon of freshly powder cardamom powder to the mixture. Mix all the ingredients well. See to it that the sugar has mixed in well.

** Finally add in the Phovu / Poha / beaten rice to this mixture and mix well. DO NOT ADD IN ANY WATER. The sugar leaves in enough water which is enough for the poha to get into a smoother consistency. If you add water on resting the poha will get mushy and will loose hold and get lump which is not at all pleasant to see nor is it tasty to relish.

** Mix well seeing to it that all of the poha has been smeared well with the mixture. If needed at this point you can add in another tablespoon of melted ghee as it gives a lovely aroma and tasty. I have not added as I did not want to add on unnecessary calories, sigh though I wish I could, It really does taste yum.

** Peel off the skin of one medium sized Banana and cut it into either small pieces or thin slices and garnish the sakkare phovu on top with it. This is optional and can be left out if you do not have banana at home or if you do not like it or if you do not want to add the same for whatever reason. Again, if you are going to serve it later, add the bananas just before serving as bananas tend to blacken and that is really not a pleasant sight.

** "Sakare Phovu / Sweet Beaten Rice / Pova Sakre Panchkadayi garnished with fried Cashew Nuts and Banana Slices" is done and ready to be served as Naivedyam to God. I had prepared this on the occasion of Tulasi Vivaha Pooja day, so the same was offered to Tulasi Mata and then distributed among my friends and trust me they simply loved this simple sweet poha / panchakajjaya and yes I had included the bananas as we love it that way. You can prepare the same on occasion or simple as it is on normal days as children love this dish very much.

** I have given below two common links, one is another version of sakre povu where in the sugar was prepared to one thread consistency, you can check out the recipe via the link shared below, the other link is to Naivedyam, wherein you will find other choices of preparation of the same if you prefer something else.
