“Combo Breakfast: Varai- Nachani- Khajoor Godu Muddo in Haldi Paan (Indian Barnyard Millet- Finger Millet- Dates Sweet Dumplings in Turmeric Leaves), Govan Shevai Panna (Seasoned Sun- dried Wheat Idiyappam), Adraki Chai (Ginger Tea)” … a tummy full breakfast to begin the day with has always been a tradition with GSB Konkani Saraswat Community … our ancestors always insisted on balancing dishes be it for meals or breakfast and sweet dishes like patholi, muddo, buns etc. were always accompanied with usli/ rulav panna/ idly etc. ... this ensured a good filling breakfast while sweet dishes were relished in limits; the very reason why I have served sweet ponsa muddo with usli … Yummilicious ….
** I am sure every home has their own combo pack of dishes for breakfast, mine sure has. I often include any type of Usli ie either the one’s prepared with either sun- dried shevai or pova or leftover idlies or upma along with dishes like banana buns, patholi, sweet ponsa/ any other muddo, sheera, etc. I learned this pattern of serving dishes from my Amma which is common in our community and if you thought that combo packs were recent discovery then you are wrong, it has been in practice of ages.
** I have mentioned that life always rolls in circles be it cuisine, costumes, jewelry, rituals etc. that which was famous a few decades back and had died down just makes it’s way back into circulation and it is funny that youngsters these days think the combo pack meals written in large block letters at food centers is a great idea while in our own homes its always been practiced for ages. I mention this not to belittle them but blame ourselves for not spreading this awareness to coming generations.
** There are plenty of dishes in each community that cannot be eaten as it is either cause it is sweet, high calorie or maybe just limited leftover. This is the breaking point when a mother or whoever prepares breakfast/ meals thinks over of accompaniments or let’s say combo of dishes that can be served together. Again, the plus point here is each one gets to enjoy dishes as per their choice too, isn’t that wonderful. I have already shared quite a few combos before just browse through for reads or choice.
** Please do not waste leftover food you can always recycle it preparing something different or just give it away in time. Dishes like sweet muddo/ patholi etc. remain good for a few days in fridge and can be served as a combo breakfast dish. Sharing recipe links to dishes in picture as is my usual practice with these posts as they are already blogged separately and there is no point in repeating them all over again. Please browse through them, try them and relish with your family and friends.
