"Irreplaceable Devastana Saaru" ... yeah, every year when it's "Rath Saptami/ Teru" (Car Festival/ Chariot Festival/ Rath Yatra) time, that Tikshe' Midshe' Amshe' mouthwatering "Devastana Saaru" is the first thing that pops on my mind ... everybody who has savored it at temples will vouch for its unmatched unique taste that creates a record thereby making it history ... it has been decades since i attended kodial teru, but the aura lingers on and will for lifetime ...
** I think almost everybody has savored or at least heard of saaru, but a little bit about saaru for those newbies ... its a water textured spicy flavorful dish with addition of tomatoes and coriander leaves, served with rice in southern parts of India, you can relish it as an appetizer too ... close on the heels of the famous Dalitoy (spiced Tuvar dal), saaru too has created a name and place for itself too ... no festival is complete without relishing steaming hot saaru along with rice ... there are many variations in saaru, however, the most loved one always remains Tomato saaru and that which is served in temples remains unparalleled in taste ... panna jevana (food served on plantain leaf) is unheard of without saaru, a dam sort is made on plantain leaf with rice with well in center, into which the steaming hot saaru is poured ... I can still recall how the enthusiastic volunteers keep asking, saaru saaru saaru vadkave (meaning if one needs more saaru to be served) ...
** Loads of childhood memories of each event of teru will always be missed ... coming to saaru, I believe that one can get close to it in taste while preparing at home, that's it, but can never replace it ... Devastana Saaru is just that, it's never the same at home, you need to savor it to know the difference ... before you wonder why??? apart from the fact that its prepared in bulk measurements to be served to lakhs of devotees, the main ingredient in it is "Devale Anugrha/ God's Grace" ... the aura of temple environment, the piousness and much more that is involved ... hat's off to the chef who I am sure prepares it with love and devotion towards God that is unmatched, truly blessed indeed ... so are those who get to witness Rath Sapthami and savor this as Naivedyam ... maybe someday God willing, I will get to be there, seek blessings and savor prasada jevana and yes, relish that awesome "Devastana Saaru" again ....
