Arda Pikkile Ponsa Upkari (Semi Ripe Jackfruit Bhaji/ Stir Fry).

“Arda Pikkile Ponsa Upkari (Semi Ripe Jackfruit Bhaji/ Stir Fry)” … Rains can make your day or ruin your day depending upon it fierce force of fall and Mumbai rains are just that … it’s been drastic for a few days now and to avoid being drenched I purchased ponosu from a vendor in hurry only to realize on reaching home that they were semi ripe … so, prepared this simple upkari/ bhaji to be served during lunchtime and it was fantastic … Yummilicious …

** Rains are unpredictable and Mumbai rains are just that, it never pours when weather reports says so and it does when least expected. However, its been a disastrous life for many for a week now with water clogging, floods, trees getting uprooted, trains and buses coming to a standstill and the worst being a few buildings completely crashing. Lives have been lost and there is havoc all round but the buzz of the city continues, that’s Mumbai for you, the city that never sleeps- the city that fights back to stay strong and united during crisis. I am sure every Mumbaikar out there will say so with pride.

** Coming to recipe these are “arda pikkile ponosu (semi ripe jackfruits)” that tastes best when prepared into dishes that needs cooking like curries, upkari (bhaji), bajia (bajo) etc. This time I am sharing a simple normal GSB Konkani Saraswat Style upkari that is the basic method of preparing any upkari/ bhaji in GSB homes. But trust me it tastes wonderful and you must give it a try if like us you too love ponosu. There is something unique that cannot be expressed in these semi ripe jackfruit pieces that blends in well with the addition of spices. I served it during lunchtime along with other dishes.

** Here is my simple recipe for “Arda Pikkile Ponsa Upkari (Semi Ripe Jackfruit Bhaji/ Stir Fry)” … my style …

** Ingredients :
Arda pikkile ponosu/ semi ripe jackfruit pods : 12-15
Coconut Oil/ Nariyal Tel/ Narlel Tela : 1 tblsp
Urad Dal/ Black Gram Dal/ Uddina Bele : 1 tsp
Mustard Seeds/ Rai/ Sasam : 1 tsp
Haldi/ Turmeric Powder : ½ tsp
Hing/ Asafoetida Powder : ½ tsp
Dry Red Chilly/ Sookhi Mirchi/ Sukkale Mirsanga : 4-5
Curry Leaves/ Kadipatta/ Karbevu : 10-12 fresh leaves.
Jaggery/ Gud/ Gur/ Bella : 1-2 tblsp grated/ powdered.
Coconut/ Soyi/ Nariyal : 2-3 tblsp gratings.
Salt/ Namak/ Meeta : to taste

** Wash, pat dry and cut the “arda pikkile ponosu (semi ripe jackfruits)” into ½ inch sized cubes and keep it aside ready. I have used about 2 cups of pieces for this recipe, you may adjust according to your family needs.

** To Prepare Upkari/ Bhaji : Heat coconut oil (narlel tela) in a kadai/ pan, when hot add urad dal and when it begins to change colour lightly add mustard seeds, when they begin to splutter lower the heat to minimum and then add haldi powder, hing powder, dry red chilly cut to small pieces, fresh curry leaves and fry for a few seconds only. Do not burn or let the chilies be browned to avoid the bhaji turning distasteful. Now add the “arda pikkile ponosu (semi ripe jackfruits)” pieces and mix well.

** Sprinkle a little bit of water, mix well, cover and cook on low heat for 3-4 minutes stirring often in between a few times. Check and cook further if required, jackfruits cooks fast, so be careful. When almost cooked and done, say 80% add jaggery powder/ grated, coconut gratings, salt to taste and mix well. Cover and further cook for another 5 minutes until the jackfruit is perfectly cooked and done. Remove and keep it aside to rest for a few minutes for the flavors to be infused well into the bhaji.

** “Arda Pikkile Ponsa Upkari (Semi Ripe Jackfruit Bhaji/ Stir Fry)” is done and ready to be served. Tastes best served as a side dish during meals or you can serve it along with pova usli/ upma etc. during breakfast too. I served it for lunch with rice along with Donnemirsange Bajo (Capsicum Bajia), Vali- Mashingasanga Dalitoy (Malabar Spinach- Drumstick Spiced Tuvar Dal) and it was a fantastic combination that we loved very much. Do try this bhaji/ upkari if you find semi ripe jackfruit bulbs in your vicinity and enjoy with family and friends, I am sure they will all love it.
