“Veg. Canapes/ Basket Chaat filled with Onion- Cucumber- Tomato Raita and topped with Pomegranate (Dalimb) along with Farsan” … canapes are small bite sized pieces of toasted bread/ pastry topped with Veg or Non.Veg. fillings of ones choice; sort of a chaat … I have used these baked canapes easily available in store and kept the filling simple to our liking … best served as a starter/ snack or just enjoy a few whenever you want to ease hunger pangs … Yummilicious …
** About canapes, I must confess I have no much knowledge though I have relished it many times in the last decade, both at home and at parties. The food is believed have been originated in France somewhere in mid 1800. Canape is also the french name for a sofa seater and the name came about as reference to this snack as the toppings were supposed to sit within just like a person sitting on sofa.
** Just like our own Indian paani poori/ gol guppa/ puchka which is supposed to be relished in a single go, ie by eating them whole in one bite, same is the case with canapes. That is the very reason why they are prepared in small/ medium sized bites, which one is able to savor in one go. The toppings too should not cross excess limits or pour out of any base that is supposed to hold it within or on, so just keep that in mind.
** You can use small sized salt biscuits or even kababs/ tikkis/ cutlets etc. as the base and top them with whichever filling you desire to relish it with. However, baked canape baskets you see in the picture is the ones used largely for canapes, we get them in square and rectangular shapes too. Whichever canape you use just see to it that they are small sized and can be savored in one go, as we cannot bite them halved.
** Here is how I prepared these delicious “Veg. Canapes/ Basket Chaat filled with Onion- Cucumber- Tomato Raita and topped with Pomegranate (Dalimb) along with Farsan” … My style … they taste awesome …
** I must mention here that I kept the filling simple by using Raita ie Salad with Curds that include Onion (Piyavu/ Kanda), Tomatoes and Cucumber (Taushe’/ Khakdi) along with spices. I have used skimmed homemade Curds (Dahi) and fresh Pomegranate (Dalimb) seeds too. Farsan used as topping is store bought and so are the basket shaped canapes as both are easily available in stores.
** To assemble the Canapes : Place them in row and with the help of a small spoon gently add in about a tablespoon of prepared veg. raita into each of them to just the level of the canapes. Now top them with ¼ tsp of farsan (sev/ chooda) and a few fresh seeds of pomegranate. Serve them immediately lest they turn soggy.
** “Veg. Canapes/ Basket Chaat filled with Onion- Cucumber- Tomato Raita and topped with pomegranate (dalimb) along with farsan” is done and ready to be served. Always serve chats immediately once assembled or else they will turn soggy/ softer. They taste best served crisp with chilled veg. raita, at least I love this filling as it is simple and healthy. There are a few more which I regularly prepare, one with egg and the other with small sized prawns, that too tastes awesome and I will share them as soon as I prepare them, till then do try these and enjoy with your family and friends.
** A few tips to be remembered while preparing these canapes …
** Do not add large sized green chilies or other spices in raita as canapes are supposed to be eaten in one go and that will turn unpleasant. You will need to either grind them to a paste or use other spices for the same.
** See to it that you cut all the veggies included in the raita into small even sized pieces. It is unpleasant if they drop out while eating.
** You can add a little bit of KhattHa- MeetHa- TeekHa Chutney on the base of the filling if desired, it tastes wonderful, especially with sprouted chat toppings. Yes, you can include any sprouts you desire too and steam them too if required.
** If you have small children, see to it that you serve them topped with simple less spicy sev (shenvo) instead of farsan.
** You can also add small pieces of boiled potato if desired, children will love it.
** I guess by now, you have understood what I am trying to mention, right, you can top them with anything you prefer, its your choice.
** You can also check out on “Onion- Cucumber- Tomato Raita” recipe link shared below, however, see to it that you either chop the green chillies finely or add in a paste of the same …
