"Butterscotch Flavored Sheera topped with Almond Slivers" ... sharing my today's Naivedyam with all my friends here ... prepared our usual sheera with a twist by addition of butterscotch ... Enjoy .. Stay Blessed~Spread Happiness ....
** Sheera needs no introduction. This golden sweet colored dish is prepared almost in every Indian home and is also known as Sooji Halwa in most parts of India, Rava Sheera in western India, Rava Kesari in southern parts and by and large in Konkani homes it’s just called “Sheera”. The most common one prepared as Naivedyam / Prasadam / offering to God in Hindu homes that is loved by young and old alike. Many people relish this with poori and the combo of poori with sheera is another common one in southern parts. I have prepared many real fruit flavored sheera, like pomegranate, mango, saffron, chickoo etc.
** Today is the first day of Shravana Masa a holy month for all Hindus. We Konkani Saraswat’s worship Sun God, Tulasi Mata, the entrance doorstep of our homes and the dieties in our Mantap by offering choodi, a small bunch of many types of flowers and durva, tulsi tied together to each of them. I will not run into details of the pooja as I will make a separate post of the same soon. This pooja is performed on Fridays and Sundays only during the month of Shravan and today being the first Sunday of the auspicious month I wanted to prepare Naivedyam as offering that was something different from the regular sweet poha or sheera etc.
** Sheera is really easy to prepare and since it was really raining heavily, I was held up in some work, so in order to finish the preparation fast I decided to prepare sheera with a twist for Naivedyam. I added on butterscotch syrup to sheera to bring in the flavor and I must say I very happy with the outcome of this delicious dessert. My home was filled with the lovely aroma of butterscotch that sent my tummy to rumble and I was really impatient to taste it as I could do so only after offering as Naivedyam to God. Do try this one, I am sure your family and friends will love the same, it tastes really delicious and is very easy to prepare.
** Here is my Simple Recipe to "Butterscotch Flavored Sheera topped with Almond Slivers" ...
** Ingredients :
Bombay Rava / Sooji / Rulavu : 1 cup (Regular one)
Sugar : 1 heaped cup (+/- depending upon individual taste)
Ghee : ½ cup
Butterscotch Syrup : ½ cup (store bought)
Almond Slivers : 3-4 tblsp
Water : 2 to 2.5 cups of boiling water.
** In a thick bottomed Kadai heat ghee, when the ghee melts and becomes thin add in the Rava / Sooji and fry for some time on medium heat till the rawness goes and you get a nice aroma or very slightly browned. This takes about 10 minutes. Keep stirring with a spatula so that the rava does not get burnt. This step is important to get a tasty sheera.
** Once the rava is fried well, lower the heat to minimum and slowly add in the boiling water. Be careful when you add the water as it splutter a bit, so stay far and pour little slowly and not in one go. Mix well so that there are no lumps. The rava cooks fast so you should stir it really well quickly. You a large handled spatula, to avoid burning your hand if you are new to preparing of sheera.
** Once the rava has cooked and the water has almost dried up add in sugar and stir well, add more or less as keeping in mind sweetness preference in your home. But I add that which is mentioned as I like my sheera sweet, but not too sweet and this measurement gives it right. Mix well and let the sugar and rava both are cooked together till done and there is no moisture left.
** Now add in the butterscotch syrup or topping (they are readily available in stores) and mix well. Keep stirring on low heat until sheera leaves the sides of the kadai. This will not take much time, also see to it the heat is low. When it leaves sides and there is not moisture it is done.
** Prepare a tray / plate to which melted ghee has been smeared evenly prior to starting the sheera process. Once butterscotch sheera is done, pour the mixture into a plate and spread evenly with the back of the spatula or a tumbler to the back of which a little bit of ghee has been applied and level the sheera nicely.
** Garnish with Almond slivers on top of the sheera kept aside for garnishing and again press it down slightly with the back of the tumbler evely so that they stick to the sheera in a even layer. Let the sheera cool a bit. With a blunt knife put cuts on the sheera to make them into square / diamond shape (or any shape you desire. Once completely cooled you can gently remove the pieces by inserting the blunt knife and loosening it to remove it from the plate.
** "Butterscotch Sheera topped with Almond Slivers” is done and ready to be served. You can serve this hot or cold as per your liking. You can serve sheera with poori, or even stuff the sheera inside poori dough while rolling and deep fry them. The combo is very much to children’s liking. Most of Konkani Saraswats prepare this as Naivedyam / Prasadam and offer it to God and then distribute among family members and friends.
** Note : You can just mix in the almond slivers to the butterscotch sheera and serve it with large serving spoon if you do not want to put them on tray and cut them into pieces. Just serve them as you wish as it is or with some hot poori. Sheera with Poori is a famous south Indian combo served at many restaurants or even during functions.
