** I guess summer and heat go hand in hand for all of us and I am sure everybody just prays for the rains to come in sooner to be cool and comfortable. The gnarly side effects of intense summer heat and the rising humidity makes it impossible to venture out on purchases/ shopping or office work and you just want to be within the four walls with the AC turned on. However, this too at times become short lived, as there will be power cuts or the machine trips due to constant over consumption of electricity. Sigh, a very bad condition for all and all we can do is reach out to coolants to sip on to beat the summer heat. Tried with moong sprouts for the first time, its good, however my favourite is still nachani uddaka; guess consumption of the same for decades has made its impact on me. There are plenty of juices and other coolants shared in the blog to which I will share a few common links at the bottom of this recipe, do browse through and try them.
** Here is my recipe for “Kirlailele Moong- Kharik- Khajoor Uddaka (Green Gram Sprouts- Dried Dates- Dates Coolant” … my style …
** Ingredients :
Sprouted or Soaked Whole Moong/ Whole Green Gram : ½ cup
Coconut/ Soyi/ Nariyal : 3-4 tblsp freshly grated
Kharik/ Dry Dates Powder : 3-4 tblsp
Dates/ Khajoor Syrup : ¼ cup
OR
Soaked Dates/ Khajoor : 12-15 in warm water
Jaggery/ Goda/ Bella/ Gud : 1 cup grated/ powdered
Cardamom/ Ellaichi/ Yellu Powder : ½ tsp
Kala Namak/ Rock Salt/ Sendha Namak : ½ tsp
Chilled Water : 1 liter.
Ice Cubes : as required
** I have used “Sprouted Moong/ Green Gram” for this recipe, you can use soaked Moong too, its just that I always have a stock of sprouts in my fridge and I make the best use of them as a natural plant based protein- fiber. If using soaked grams then wash a handful of “Whole Moong/ Green Gram” and soak them in 4-5 cups of water overnight or for 8 hours. Drain and rinse the green grams and allow to drain off excess water. Do not add excess moong do this recipe as it loses out on taste, a handful is more than enough. Now it is ready to be prepared into juice, rest of the recipe remains same.
** You can use easily available “Dates/ Khajoor Syrup” from stores for this recipe, which is what I did. In case you want to avoid the same, you can soak the Dates/ Khajoor in warm water for 30 minutes and grind the same too.
** Add all the ingredients mentioned above ie moong sprouts, coconut gratings (white part only), kharik powder, dates syrup and jaggery into a mixer grinder. Add 1 cup of chilled water and grind all to a fine paste.
** Note : I have added coconut gratings as it gives a natural taste of sweetness to the coolant. You may skip it if not desired, its Optional.
** Remove and strain the prepared paste through a fine sieve into a large vessel. Add cardamom powder, kala namak, chilled water, ice cubes as required and mix well. Check and add more jaggery if required only.
** Note : The sweetness actually depends upon individual preference. To sweeten the coolant you can either increase jaggery or dates syrup. However, excess dates syrup or karik powder is not recommended, so add jaggery to be safe.
** Store the prepared drink/ coolant in fridge for 3-4 hours or until needed. Before serving mix the coolant well so that the remnants settled at the bottom is evenly mixed. Add a few crushed Ice cubes to it, mix well and its ready.
** “Kirlailele Moong- Kharik- Khajoor Uddaka (Green Gram Sprouts- Dried Dates- Dates Coolant” is done and ready to be served. Tastes best served chilled and is one of the best coolant to beat the rising summer heat. Moong/ Green Gram is supposed to cool the body temperature naturally, so this cool drink is best suited during summer. Addition of khajur gives the needed nutrient to the body that’s lost due to sweat. Do try this simple amchi summer coolant and enjoy with your family on weekends.
** Note : This coolant tastes best served chilled to beat the rising summer heat. A healthy summer drink that can be served during weekends or holidays to both young and old alike to enjoy when feeling exhausted due to heat. Try including plenty of fruits and juices into your diet and also to avoid the heat wave drink at least 3 liters of water through the day.
