Khotto (Idly steamed in Jackfruit Leaves baskets) with Coconut- Raw Mango Chutney.

“Urad-Tandul Khotto (Black Gram Dal- Rice Idly steamed in Jackfruit Leaves baskets)" served with “Coconut- Raw Mango- Ginger Chutney” … I have often wondered what is it about khotto that makes it different from Idly … well they do turn out spongier and tastier and I have always loved the vein mark of the jackfruit leaf it imprints on the khotto … for today’s breakfast; its soft spongy khotto’s dunked in kempa chutney … try it, to know the difference … Yummilicious …

** Khotto is not only a famous most sought after breakfast dish from GSB Konkani Saraswat Cuisine but it is also the tastiest when compared with Idlies. For those of you who have not savored them will not know the difference unless you do so and those of you who have will completely agree with me. Traditionally our ancestors used jackfruit leaves to prepare molds using the sarnivira kaddi (coconut tree leaf sticks) to hold them in place. The Idly batter was then poured into them and steamed to get those luxurious looking large sized odd shaped Idlies. Somehow these always turn out softer than idly and almost every amchi loves them and those from southern parts of India will have definitely enjoyed them often in their homes either with sambar, any curry or with chutney.

** In Mumbai its difficult to get these leaves unless you have access to jackfruit tree somewhere in your area. Luckily, for me I get them in Ambernath where I visit on official visit and that gives me the opportunity to prepare Khottos. This is a Eco friendly method of use and throw molds that should be included in our lifestyle if available. As for the chutney I have used raw mango while preparing it and it’s awesome, a must try. I am sharing a few links below that includes links to khotto and the chutney shared in the picture and others for choice. You may choose any you would like to try out and relish. The link includes the one where in I have shared step by step method of preparing khotto using these leaves too. Please do browse through those links if desired and try them.
