My Pejje Jevana- Veg. Thali~ 368.

“My Pejje Jevana Veg. Thali~ 368 : Tarni Mirsange Vodi (Green Chilly Fryums- store bought), Kadgi Chakko (Raw Jackfruit Dry Masala), Ambuli Nonche (Raw Mango Pickle), Kani Ukde Tandla Pejja Toopa ghalnu (Kerala Matta Broken Red Boiled Rice Porridge topped with Ghee)” … pejje jevana is part of GSB Konkani Saraswat meals often relished with some fries, pickle and upkari and any type of curry as side dish is treat … definitely a heartwarming meal … Yummilicious …

** We all face days when we want to enjoy a simple meal be if for lunch/ dinner and pejje jevana (rice porridge meal) very aptly fits the bill. During summer one is more interested in consuming liquids and resists heavy food, but then lunchtime is that one meal when you need to feed your body with proper food. Pejje jevana/ Rice porridge meals are always a favorite and though I love some fried fish served along with this meal, there are times when you want to stick to No Onion- No Garlic vegetarian meals. Plenty of raw jackfruit is available, so prepared chakko a delicious dish from GSB Konkani Saraswat Cusine that is a favorite of all amchies.

** Though I would have loved to prepare sun dried items like vodi (fryums)/ papad/ shevai at home, I must confess that it’s been over 25 yrs since I prepared them. After shifting to new home, unfortunately I have no facility of sunlight areas like the previous one, the very reason why I cannot still prepare them. However, they are easily available in Mangalore stores, all round the country and I always make it a point to stock them up round the year as they fall in very handy. Sharing links to recipes in the thali above as is my usual practice with post of thali, combo, solo meals etc. if they have already been shared elsewhere before, do browse through and try them.

** Coming to Pejja/ Rice Porridge, you can use any rice to prepare pejja/ porridge like surti kollam, amba mor, however in southern parts of India, the most desired one is red boiled rice porridge (ukde sheetHa pejja). However, it is recently about 4 yrs back that I learnt about Kani Ukde Tandul (Kerala Matta Broken Red Boiled Rice) which I purchased from a Kerala stores. It is easy to cook and turns out perfectly soft and mushy the way a proper pejja/ porridge should be prepared. You may find it online or in any southern stores in your vicinity, do try it out, it can also be easily used in preparation of dosa, which I have included in this blog.

** Do include in your diet, pejje jevana (rice porridge meal) be it with inclusion of veg. dishes or non. Veg dishes, it tastes wonderful. Amma always served us pejja at mid-morning during our holidays as lunchtime was always a late affair. Those days we played about and helped amma with household work, the very reason why we could easily consume food without worrying about increase in weight unlike these days. So, though mid-morning meals are out of routine these days pejje jevana is still enjoyed in most homes either as a breakfast or during meals and in my home I often enjoy it during lunchtime as we just love it.

** Above all, always serve pejja/ rice porridge topped with a generous serving (1 tsp) of toop/ ghee/ clarified butter. To those who are worried about consuming ghee/toop, I think the recent clarifications by almost all Doctors, nutritionist and Ayurveda practitioners must have assured you about including them into your daily diets, say 2 tblsp a day. I am happy that amma always insisted on us having a little bit of ghee and luckily I have continued that habit without falling prey to modern conclusions from people denying our ancestors knowledge only to fall back on to same age old practices, so do not worry, a little bit goes a long way.
