Urad Dal- Moong Dal- Oats Idly (Black Gram Dal- Green Gram Dal- Oats Idly).

“Urad Dal- Moong Dal- Oats Idly (Black Gram Dal- Green Gram Dal- Oats Idly)” served with Pudina Dhania Nariyal Chutney (Mint Coriander Coconut Chutney) … urad dal- moong dal idlies are very famous as they are not only diet friendly but also diabetic friendly … it is a joy and soul satisfaction when experiments turn out successful … tried adding on oats and the Idly just took off to another level making it more spongier, nutritious, healthier and tastier … Yummilicious ….

** Idlies, dosa, seasoned doddaka, khotto have recently not only become a routine breakfast item in my home but at times we switch it over to lunchtime too. I love experimenting matching different ingredients be it for Idlies/ dosas etc. and luckily 90% of them have turned out successful. It’s been quite some time since I tried out something different with idlies and was giving a lot of thought to some nutritious mix and match.

** Urad dal and moong dal idlies was a common breakfast item I grew up relishing as my aanu (father) being diabetic amma (mom) always prepared it often and I continued doing so after marriage as it’s easy to prepare. I have been intending to give it a try with addition of oats for long time now, as oats are good for health and trust me it was highly successful, as it turned out very spongy and tastier too giving me immense pleasure.

** Here is my very own simple recipe for “Urad Dal- Moong Dal- Oats Idly (Black Gram Dal- Green Gram Dal- Oats Idly)” … My Style ….

** Ingredients :
Urad Dal/ Black Gram Split Dal : 1 cup
Moong Dal/ Green Gram Split Dal : 1 cup
Oats : 1 cup
Green Chillies/ Tarni Mirsanga/ Hari Mirchi : 4-5 fresh ones
Ginger/ Adrak/ Alle’ : 1 inch piece
Curry Leaves/ Kadipatta/ Karbevu : 5-6 fresh ones.
Salt/ Namak/ Meeta : to taste

** Wash and soak urad dal and moong dal together in plenty of water for 4-6 hrs. Drain off water, wash well again, and then grind to a smooth thick batter. Lastly add in green chillies and adrak cut into pieces and continue grinding until they are well crushed.

** Roast oats in a thick bottomed kadai for 2-3 minutes, just to make it warm enough as we just need to powder it and frying a bit makes it easier. Now add it into mixer grinder and grind to fine rava consistency without water. Remove the powder into a large vessel and keep it aside ready while we start grinding batter.

** Add the ground batter into the vessel along with oats. Add finely chopped curry leaves, salt and mix well. Add in water only if necessary to bring to thick Idly consistency batter. Do not make the batter too thin, we need to have it dropping consistency. Keep this covered aside to ferment overnight or for 8 hours only.

** To Steam Idlies: Keep the Idly steamer with sufficient water for steaming. Apply oil to the Idly plate and then pour batter into each of the dents. Place the stand inside the steamer and steam on high heat for about 5 minutes, then lower the heat and steam for about another 10-12 minutes and then remove from fire.

** Keep the Idly plates separately and let cool a little bit, say for 2-3 minutes, then with the help of a blunt knife run it through the base of each idly gently to help it get unmolded. Place them all in a plate and if you have more batter, then repeat the process again by following the same method once again till all the Idlies are steamed and done.

** Note : There is no need to apply oil again for second time using of the Idly plates. You can use them repeatedly 2-3 times easily without having any problem. Again, you may choose any type of mold you prefer like Vati/ or the dented semi circular one which is what I used here or even prepare Khotto using jackfruit leaves.

** “Urad Dal- Moong Dal- Oats Idly (Black Gram Dal- Green Gram Dal- Oats Idly)” is done and ready to be served. Always serve them hot with chutney or sambar or any other side dish of your choice, however this particular Idly tastes best when served with some spiced chutney. I served them with Pudina Dhania Nariyal Chutney (Mint Coriander Coconut Chutney) and it was an awesome combination. Do try out this Idly in your home and enjoy them hot dunked in chutney with family and friends.

** As Idlies are steamed, they are supposed to be healthiest breakfast Item and recently I do try to include more healthier options into our daily diet. It is always advisable to have a healthy filling breakfast as it is the first meal of the day that prepares you for the entire work schedule through the day giving good energy, so do make it a point to begin the day on good not with good breakfast for your family and yourself.
