"Where have all those Good Ol' Home Remedies gone???" ... We have all now been trapped for a long time in search of ways to build up our immunity levels to fight against the rising fear of pandemic ... My thoughts run back to those good ol’ days … mom's stern voice of reminding not to forget that glass of "Hot Masala Milk or Turmeric Milk" at night before retiring to bed still rings in my ears ...
** There was a time when we did not fear a sneeze or two, a cough, cold or even mild fever ... in fact these were a part of our life once a year or so, sort of body throwing out toxins ... Sigh, things have changed, gone are those days, will they come back??? only time will tell ... as for now, we run a mile from anyone with these symptoms that have turned into a nightmare for over 2 yrs ... forget getting cuddled, isolation is what is dreaded now, my heart screams for those good old days but my mind reasons out they are gone, gone, just gone ...
** Those days we had hot pejja/ rice gruel with kanchi (brine lemon), sipped on hot lemon water, inhaled some hot water steam, had plenty of fruits like oranges to build up on Vitamin C and dry fruits or masala milk freshly prepared and enjoyed to the hilt as these were what we believed in for good health … we just applied some Vicks on nose/ forehead, at worst maybe a paracetamol, that's it, all we craved was to cuddle into moms arms with the whiff of her saree spreading warmth and her patting hands putting us to sleep ...
** I still remember sitting on ammas lap and being fed rice balls (mashed rice balls) rolled in thick dalitoy (spiced tuvar dal) which I innocently relished thinking they were mitai oondo (motichur laddoos) ... Ouch, you take me dumb??? na, nah, it's the magic of those hands that feed with love and lo, we sprang back to action in a day or two in full vigor, back to school, playground, full of mischief and yes, eating our favorite dishes that amma prepared for us to bounce back on health believing us to be weak after a bout of sickness ...
** Not to miss that kaalu goadu polo (sweet nachani dosa) with a huge dollop of homemade loni (butter) which I still love, simply bllliisss ... you see they knew it very well back then that nachani (finger millet) was the answer to good health, i still follow her method of nachani bolu/ porridge for constipation ... we depended on small home remedies like hot turmeric milk for bodyache, masala milk to recover from weakness, kashaya or hot soups for cold, rice porridge when sick, etc. all freshly prepared and fed with tender care by amma.
** We ate these without a murmur with strong belief that amma would deal with it ... with the lapse of time things changed, simple remedies were shown the door by invasion of ready to mix/ cook products crowding market by big corporate sales, only to be now once again pushed aside to bring back those traditional remedies that were so foolproof there by endorsing that old is gold ... it's not only tasty, healthy, but is effective and much safer in the long run, after all it's endorsed by amma and from generations beyond ...
** If one still wants to turn a blind eye, its their choice, but for me, its a joy to dig into our old roots, bring out traditional delicacies on forefront again ... may be things will change, the good ol’ days will bounce back, just like it did during childhood, like the saying “there is always a beautiful dawn full of sunshine following the darkest of nights”, there is nothing impossible for God, Is there??? may be we needed to learn this as a lesson, to value this beautiful life, God's gift to mankind which we took so much for granted, Isn’t it ???
** Eagerly waiting with faith for peace- health- happiness- prosperity to set in turning everybody's life beautiful all over again, the way it had always been … Tatastu ...
