"Mandeli Gashi (Golden Anchovies Fish Curry)" ... delicious one dish; fish curry-rice for today's lunch ... when you are racing against time, all one can manage is a simple but satisfying lunch to get re-charged ......
** Simple Mandeli fish curry today served with ukde sheetHa ie Red Boiled rice for lunch today. Mandeli fish is also known as Golden Anchovies/Salt water Fish/Ghol/ Arkoli in different languages. Fish curry is a dish my hubby loves to have with rice without any sides dishes, but then there are times when you have to prepare them as it is unhealthy not to eat some veggies. March and April month is always hectic for me and I always tell all my friends and relatives not to expect anything much from me as I am working round the clock for yearned commitment, then accounting etc. Then there is the commitment towards community commitments as being volunteers, we have been doing our bit towards society as much to the extent as possible. There is also the festive activity with Gudi Padva/Samsaar Padvo/Ugadi and then Ram Navami being priorities that almost makes us work round the clock. Therefore, whenever I have time, I cook a few dishes and put it in the fridge for later use and those days I cannot cook much, we relish some simple food like khichidi or dahi bhaat. So, for today I just sliced some cucumbers as a salad and served this curry with rice and we enjoyed the meal. Mandeli fish is similar to silver fish ie Mothyale in Konkani and tastes great when fried. I prepared gashi today ie seasoned with onions and it was really very tasty with red boiled rice.
** Here is the very simple recipe for "Mandeli Gashi (Golden Anchovies Fish Curry)"… My Style ...
** Wash, remove the scales if any, trim the fins and slice off the head portion of Mandeli fishes. Give a slit on the stomach side and clean inside with plenty of water. I have used about 12-15 mandeli fishes. Just apply salt all over the fish and keep it aside for 10-15 minutes and then once again clean them under clean water and keep it ready aside.
** For the Masala to be Ground : In a mixer grinder add in 1 cup of freshly grated coconut with 8-10 kashmiri Red chillies or 2 tblsp of kashmiri red chilly powder. Add in a small marble sized tamarind piece and grind to a very fine paste with about ¼ to ½ cup of water. Do not add in more water, but only that much how much is necessary. The masala should be very smooth and fine in texture.
** To prepare the Curry : Add in the ground masala into a wide mouthed stainless steel vessel and add in a little bit of water and mix well. Add salt to taste and bring to a boil, when it comes to boiling point, lower the heat, and let simmer as you add in the cleaned and kept ready mandeli fish. Mandeli fish cooks really fast, say maximum 4-5 minutes, when done remove and keep it aside covered while you prepare the seasoning.
** For Seasoning/Tempering : In a small pan add in 2-3 tblsp of oil, when hot add in one medium sized onion finely chopped and fry till evenly browned. Now pour it over curry and kept ready aside and cover with tight lid and keep it aside for the flavors to seep in for say about 15-20 mins.
** "Mandeli Gashi (Golden Anchovies Fish Curry)" is done and ready to be served. Best when served hot with Ukde SheetHa (Red Boiled Rice) or any other plain rice or mildly spiced rice. You can also serve a few side dishes like upkari (bhaji), salad etc. along with the curry and rice and it will be a complete meal that you can enjoy with your family and friends. And if you add in a few fish or veggie fries the meal will be that much more delicious.
