Little Millet Cheppi Kheeri (Cooked in Coconut Milk~Turmeric Leaves).

"Little Millet Cheppi Kheeri / Sama Cooked in Coconut milk with Fresh Turmeric Leaves" ... Millets are considered to be good for health and are now being preferred over rice ... Cheppi Kheeri meaning Bland Kheer is a traditional Konkani Saraswat dish prepared by cooking rice in coconut milk with turmeric leaves, I for a change tried it with “Little Millet” also known as Sama/Kutki/Samai and trust me it tasted simply awesome … Enjoy this one …

** Cheppi Kheeri basically means bland kheer, a delicacy from Konkani Saraswat Cuisine prepared specially during monsoon period as this requires addition of fresh turmeric leaves which are available in plenty then. Cheppi Kheeri is a must during Ganesha Chaturthi festival, and Gowri Pooja, it is believed that Lord Shiva loved this dish and Goddess Parvati his consort prepared it with love for him. It is believed that though this dish is bland, the love with which Parvathi used to prepare for her husband used to make it the most tastiest dish ever. Guess the required ingredient in this dish is love of preparing it. So whenever you prepare this dish do it so with love and you are sure to receive the same. Coming to the recipe, it is a simple dish prepared by cooking rice in coconut milk with addition of turmeric leaves, that’s it and its done.

** I have already posted the dish in detail with step by step procedure, so will not be including the same again. This time round I gave twist with addition of Little Millet / Sama instead of rice and trust me it was so delicious that my hubby feels this one is much better than the one with rice. Millets are the in thing now, as they are considered to be much more healthier than rice, so I opted for this twist this time and sure to give many more tries with many other millets too, till then enjoy this one with your family and friends. The recipe remains same but there is slight changes in the method of cooking coz. here millets have to be pressure cooked and also I have used readily available coconut milk from stores instead of preparing the same at home. If need be you can prepare the coconut milk fresh at home too, for which you can check the recipe in the link given below at the end of this recipe.

** Here is my simple recipe for "Little Millet Cheppi Kheeri / Sama Cooked in Coconut milk with Fresh Turmeric Leaves" …. My Style …

** Wash 1 cup of Little Millet and soak in plenty of water for about 15-20 minutes. Now drain off the water, and add the little millet into a pressure cooker with about 2.5 cups of water and pressure cook to 2 whistles on medium flame, then lower the heat to minimum and cook for about 5 minutes. Do not worry if the cooker blows out a few whistles. After 5 mins just remove from flame and keep it aside for the pressure in the cooker to get released on its own.

** Once you are able to open the lid do so and then gently add in the cooked little millet along with the water if any into a thick bottomed stainless steel vessel. Add in 3 cups of water, mix well and bring to boiling point stirring often to avoid the millet getting burnt at the bottom. Cook till the mixture thickens. Now add in 2 turmeric leaves cut into 4 inches length giving it a slight twist with hands so that the leaves get slightly crushed and impart aroma into kheer.

** Lastly add in 200 ml of thick coconut milk and mix well. Cook on medium heat till the kheer thickens well. Add in a large pinch of salt, mix and the little millet kheeri is done. Keep this covered aside for at least 30-45 minutes. The resting period thickens the kheeri and gives it that glassy effect and turns out much tastier with infusion of turmeric leaves aroma too. Once the resting period is over open and check the consistency, if too thick you can add some hot water and mix well. But usually it is served in thick consistency.

** "Little Millet Cheppi Kheeri / Sama Cooked in Coconut milk with Fresh Turmeric Leaves" is done and ready to be served. Always serve the Kheeri hot as an side dish with some other dishes during meal time. You can remove the leaves just before serving the same as it is unpleasant to serve it as it is and expect the guests to pick it up. This recipe when cooked with rice is served as Naivedyam first to Gowri (Goddess Parvathi) and Lord Ganesha during Ganesh Chaturthi festival and then distributed as Naivedyam amongst all those who are present. Do try out this dish and give me a feedback if possible.
