“21 Godu Appo / Sweet Paniyaram With Bananas” ... made out of Chiroti Rava (Fine Rava) ... Naivedyam for Lord Ganesha on Ananat Chaturdashi, the final day of Ganesh Chaturthi Festival … A tearful adieu as its Visarjan day today after his 12 days stay this year with the longing to see him soon again next year ......
Come Ganesh Chaturthi festival and almost every household is filled with various activities of preparing sweets, savories and obviously cleaning up the house to welcome Lord Ganesha with love and great pomp. This sweet Appo / Paniyaram is a must to be prepared during Ganesh Chaturthi time and I always make it a point to do so. There are so many variations in making these appos and I have already posted a few of them, sharing a few links below while for the others you can use the label or search option. This time I have prepared these using chiroti rava / fine rava.
Traditionally it is prepared using whole wheat, which I used to prepare initially and which have I have already posted. That was the first post through which I entered the world of blogging and with the Blessings of Lord Ganesha it has really been a beautiful Culinary Journey. I have also prepared the same with Bansi Rava / kanik rava and it tastes equally goo. This time round I prepared it with the addition of chiroti rava and it was tasty too. And basically this recipe is for those who want to prepare the appos quickly with minimum work as this one is a easy take off on the same. Well without running into much details let me add the simple recipe here, so that all of you can prepare the same as Naivedyam to Lord Ganesha, who will be very pleased. Stay Blessed.
Ingredients :
Chiroti Rava / Fine Rava : 2 cups (Approximately)
Ripe Bananas : 2 large sized. (Cavendish Bananas)
Jaggery : About 100 – 150 gms cut into small pieces or grated.
Coconut : 2 tblsp freshly grated (White part only)
Salt : A Pinch
Cardamom Powder : ½ tsp.
Ghee / Oil for deep frying.
** Put the coconut, bananas cut into pieces in a mixer grinder and grind to a paste. Now add in the jaggery grated or cut into small pieces and further grind till evenly ground to smooth paste. Do not add in any water. The jaggery and bananas have enough water content and there is absolute no need to add in any extra water while grinding.
** Note : I have used the Cavendish Bananas available plenty in Mumbai, you can use any ripe bananas. But if using smaller varieties of bananas to add in more.
** Remove the ground paste into a wide large bowl. Now add in a pinch of salt, cardamom powder and half amount of the chiroti rava mentioned above and mix well. Keep adding in the rava and mixing till you get a thick consistency. See to it that there are no lumps. Keep this aside for 15 mins.
** Note : The step of allowing the batter to rest is important. This is done to ensure that the rava absorbs the moisture and gets dunked in it resulting in swelling a little bit. The batter consistency should be thick dropping one. If you find the batter a little bit thinner do not be disheartened. Add in a few teaspoons of rava and gently mix the batter. If you have adding in more and the batter has turned out dry on resting add in a little bit of water and mix well. To avoid such mishaps I advice you to add in the slowly little by little so that it does not dry out. Add in only that much rava that gives you right consistency. Now the batter has rested and is ready for removing appos.
** Now heat the appo / paniyaram pan and add in some melted ghee or oil in each of the dents. When hot, lower the heat and pour a large tablespoon of the batter into each mold / dent of the pan. Do not add more. It should remain within the inner level of the molds. Cover with a dome shaped lid and cook on slow till crispy on the bottom side.
** Gently run a blunt knife through the rim edging of each appo and loosen them gently with the help of another spoon turn them over / flip each appo and cook uncovered for a few minutes till done. Remove with the help of a spoon / blunt knife and repeat the process with the remaining batter till all the batter has been used up.
