"Kaju- Narla Godu Rosu/ Harshala (Sweet Fresh Cashew Apple Fruit- Coconut Milk) served with Povu (Poha/ Beaten Rice/ Avakakki)” ... I have often tried giving a small twist to our very own godu narla roslu/ harshala (jaggery sweetened fresh coconut milk), a traditional dish from GSB Konkani Sarasawat Cuisine with addition of fresh fruit puree … after strawberries this time tried with kaju phala (cashew apple fruit) that are available in plenty now ... summer is that time when cold desserts/ dishes are preferred the most and this dish tastes awesome served chilled either with shevai/ idiyappam or poha/ beaten rice … Yummilicious …
** Narla godu rosu with fruits (sweetened coconut milk with fruits) is a famous traditional dish from GSB Konkani Saraswat Cuisine often prepared and served with shevai/ idiyappam/ string hoppers or poha/ pova/ beaten rice as per individual preference. The name may differ from place to place and may be referred differently by the people belonging to the same community while the basic recipe remains the same with minute difference. The name of be it dishes or the ingredients is often a part of debate among many amchigele’s each claiming to be original. Before one begin to wonder, without running into details, I would like to mention that this is unfortunately because of the immigration undergone by the community often over the period of invasion the country had to go through. You will find the history of GSB Konkani Saraswat Communities journey over the century from the banks of the holy Saraswati River (origin) to Bengal, to Goa and all way through coastal belt.
** In my culinary journey I have often come across similar recipes referred differently, which I always found interesting. However, it is heartening to notice that one thing binds all of us together and that is our belief and faith in Dharma Guru’s of our 4 Matt’s Peetha to which the community has remained faithful over centuries. These are all small differences that means nothing, we should just brush it aside and move on to spread our culinary delicacies all round the world so that it is learnt and enjoyed by not only our community but by people from all faiths; trust me our recipes are simple, tasty and above all healthy and good for overall health. As for this recipe I have tried it out in different flavours like ripe mango, ripe jackfruit, muskmelon etc. and I must mention that the most successful one was with strawberries, which was in full demand among my friends. I have written in details about this dish in previous post to which I am sharing link for easy access.
** This recipe is same, just served differently ie with poha/ pova/ beaten rice. Just serve the "Kaju- Narla Godu Rosu/ Harshala (Sweet Fresh Cashew Apple Fruit- Coconut Milk)” chilled in a bowl and beaten rice/ poha alongside with it, so that it can mixed and eaten. Avoid adding Pova/ Beaten Rice directly to the harshala/ rosu before serving as it will soften immediately and lose out on taste. This dessert can be savored either with shevai/ idiyappam as mentioned in my previous post or with poha/ pova/ beaten rice, the choice is entirely yours as per your convenience or preference. I actually served shevai/ idiyappam during meals with spicy curry after which I served this dish; some with shevai and some with poha as a dessert. Something different, try it, if you like cashew fruit.
