Naivedyam: Nachani (Ragi) Godu Phovu (Poha)/ Sweetened Finger Millet Flakes.

"Naivedyam: Nachani (Ragi) Godu Phovu (Poha)/ Sweetened Finger Millet Flakes” … Godu Povu is a traditional Prasadam from GSB Konkani Saraswat Cuisine prepared using beaten rice/ povu to be offered to God during festive occasions … for a change on the auspicious occasion of "Kartika Purnima" I tried godu povu with ragi flakes/ poha and it turned out awesome …

** Preparing of Godu/ Sweet Poha (pova, beaten rice, avalaki) on auspicious occasion is a must in GSB Konkani Saraswat homes especially during Shravana Masa Choodi Puja, Lakshmi Pooja during Diwali, Tulasi Pooja during the Kartika Masa Month etc. This is offered as Naivedyam to God and then distributed among family and friends and in my home as my hubby loves it I prepare it often.

** Almost every home prepares this at least a few times in a year following their own traditions on festive days and this time as I had prepared it on Tulsi Pooja day just 2 days back I wanted to prepare something different other than sweet poha. I had purchased these ragi poha/ povu (nachani/ finger millet flakes) online and was eager to prepare Godu pova with it and Bingo! it turned out excellent, sweet and crunchy.

** It is a relief to have the facility of online shopping these days as otherwise I find it tiresome to do so given my busy schedule, not to mention overcrowded grocery stores. I have been wanting to purchase millet flakes for a long time but was hesitant looking at the cost. Finally I bought 3 types of millet flakes and will soon prepare usli (upma) and other items using them, until then enjoy this "Nachani Godu Povu".

** I prepared it on the auspicious occasion of "Kartika Purnima" as "Naivedyam" offering to Sri. Hari, you may do so on any occasion. Without running into details let me share the recipe which is same as that prepared using beaten rice/ povu, I have not made any other changes. I am sharing a links below to the traditional recipe and others which you may browse through and check out for more information.

** Here is my recipe for "Nachani (Ragi) Godu Phovu (Poha)/ Sweetened Finger Millet Flakes” … my style, try it, tastes awesome ….

** Ingredients :
Jaggery/ Gud/ Goda/ Bella : 200- 250 gms
Nachani Phovu/ Ragi Poha/ Finger Millet Flakes : 400 gms (Approximately)
Coconut/ Soyi/ Nariyal : 2 cups freshly grated
Cashew nut pieces/ Kajjubi/ Kaju : ½ cup
Black Til/ Sesame/ Teelu : 2 tblsp
White Til/ Sesame/ Teelu : 3 tblsp
Cow's Ghee/ Gaiche Toop : 1-2 tblsp
Cardamom Powder/ Ellaichi/ Yellu : 1 tsp

** Roast finely chopped cashew nuts, black til and white til separately and allow to cool. Mix them and keep them aside ready.

** Melt gud/ goda/ jaggery cut into pieces in a thick bottomed kadai/ pan on low to medium heat WITHOUT adding water. You can add 2-3 tablespoons of water if desired, ie if you feel it will get burnt at the bottom. I have not as with practice, you adjust the heat and melt the jaggery by stirring often, so be careful and avoid burning it. I used chikki gud (sticky jaggery) easily available in Mumbai, you may use any.

** Once the jaggery has completely melted, let come to boil on medium heat and when you see bubbles lower the heat to minimum and let cook further for about 5-6 minutes only. You should be careful at this step as the jaggery should not get overcooked or else it will turn hard. You should get just one thread consistency and avoid any further cooking of the jaggery, please watch from an expert if newbie.

** Now immediately add freshly grated coconut (only the top white part of the coconut should be used) and mix well. Keep stirring for 3-5 minutes on low heat and avoid over cooking lest the chances of caramelisation increases.

** Remove from heat add ghee, mix well and let cool for some time. (Always use homemade cow's ghee for Naivedyam dishes on auspicious days, as it is considered sacred). This is called churnu/ churan and is basic for godu povu.

** Once its cooled add the roasted nuts, sesame, cardamom powder and mix well. Let cool to room temperature. When the churnu has completely cooled down add nachani (ragi/ finger millet) flakes little by little while mixing it well with the churan all the time until you get all the poha/ flakes evenly coated and done.

** Note : Do not add all of the nachani/ ragi flakes in one go as it may be excess in proportion, you will need to judge, add little by little while you keep mixing to obtain the proper required texture. The churan should be evenly mixed without turning dry textured. The amount of flakes to be added really depends on the thickness and wetness of the churan and excess will make the godu povu, brittle/ too soft on resting.

** Note : The mixing of poha is something learnt with practice and is left to individual judgment. Let the mixture be slightly on wet on texture as it will adjust when it rests. I have given approximate amount of poha, you may increase or decrease as per the outcome. Once again if you are a newbie I suggest you learn it visually from someone who knows it for proper understanding or watch it on YouTube.

** "Nachani (Ragi) Godu Phovu (Poha)/ Sweetened Finger Millet Flakes” is done and ready to offered as Naivedyam/ Prasadam to God and thereby distributed among family and friends. Godu Povu prepared with beaten rice is a common Naivedyam dish in GSB homes often prepared on auspicious occasions, birthdays etc. and is served along with snacks to guests at function gatherings. Children love it, so do elders, the very reason why it is often prepared during holidays as an evening snack. There are plenty of posts where you will find this snack served along with other dishes just use the search option for access and please do try it, sure to be loved by all at home.

** Godu Povu is usually prepared with Jaggery, however, you can use sugar syrup too. Again, there plenty of choices with small variations in preparing this sweetened beaten rice or any millet flakes, which you will find on browsing through my Blog. I will sharing more recipes as and when I prepare, do follow/ subscribe to my Blog, fb Page, Instagram for recipe updates. Stay Blessed- Spread Happiness.
