Urad Dal- Tandul Khotto and Ponsa Godu Khotto (Black Gram Dal- Rice Idly and Ripe Jackfruit sweet Idly)

“Urad Dal- Tandul Khotto and Ponsa Godu Khotto/ Muddo (Black Gram Dal- Rice Steamed Idly and Ripe Jackfruit sweet Idly prepared in Jackfruit Leaves Molds)” … traditional dishes, that are a delight to relish ... Yummilicious ...

** Most of us are familiar with khotto ie batter steamed in jackfruit leaves pinned up molds/ baskets. This is a age old traditional method of preparing more so popular in southern parts of Indian homes were there is always a jackfruit tree in the backyard … This is no doubt an economical way of preparing and using the leaves which are otherwise a waste, not to mention that they will ease the workload of washing utensils …

** Any type of thick batter can be steamed in these and there are plenty to chose from shared in my Blog … when ponosu/ ripe jackfruit is in season; a sweet (godu) khotto/ mudo/ idly/ patholi, a delicacy from GSB Konkani Saraswat Cuisine, is a must to be prepared and relished a few times … I strongly believe that we should make it a point to prepare these dishes whenever possible so that the tradition is continued and not lost over the period for coming generations …

** Luckily it’s that era when all knowledge can be preserved and shared via network/ blogs … I always prepare a few extra baskets/ molds out of jackfruit leaves to prepare ponsa khotto whenever I prepare urad- tandul or any other type of khotto … and if you do not have access to jackfruit leaves, don’t worry, you can use any Idly mold for preparing this dish, so don’t skip making them, remember jackfruit is good for health …

** So, the next time you find ripe jackfruit with your fruit vendor, do purchase them and try these out … relish them steaming hot topped with a generous serving of homemade toop/ ghee for best in taste …this is one monsoon delicacy that should not be missed and now that monsoon has just about begun, go for it, tastes awesome, sure to be love in your home as young and old alike love this dish …

** This just my thoughts on the subject which I have made a post to share and the recipes have already been shared before. Before you wonder then why have I made this post???, well I just felt like making a separate post to encourage those who have not yet tried these south Indian delicacies to try them in their own home and enjoy them with their loved one's, it is always a pleasure to share traditional dishes in order to let the same continue for coming generation, as whatever written here will outlive us ...
