“Mitkesanga Batate Gashi/ Cluster Beans Potato Curry” … here is a simple non spicy curry from GSB Konkani Saraswat Cusine … tastes awesome served with rice/ roti/ parathas/ dosa ... Yummilicious …
** Gashi is a medium spicy curry that is very common in GSB konkani Saraswat household which I have already posted with different combinations before. This curry is prepared with either veggies or veggies with addition of pulses. I have written a lot about this curry, so I will not repeat them again and will share a common link to all gashi items both veg. and non.veg which you can browse through in leisure.
** Though this curry is usually served with rice in most of the times, it can also be prepared on days when you want to go on a “No Onion- Garlic- Rice” upvas meals and it tastes wonderful served with any type of roti you prefer. Today being Kartika months Krishna Paksha Ekadashi, I prepared it to be served with nachani methi parathas. Do try out these simple recipes and enjoy a healthy lifestyle with your family.
** Here is my Recipe for “Mitkesanga Batate Gashi/ Cluster Beans Potato Curry”... from GSB Konkani Saraswat Cusine ... my Style ….
** Ingredients :
Cluster Beans/ Gavar/ Mitkesanga : 500 gms.
Potato/ Batato/ Aloo : 3 medium sized.
Salt/ Namak/ Meeta : to taste
** For Masala to be Ground :
Coconut/ Soyi/ Nariyal : 1 heaped cup freshly grated.
Kashmiri Red Chillies/ Byadgi Mirchi/ Kumte Mirsanga : 6-8
Jeera / Cumin Seeds : ½ tsp (Optional)
Tamarind/ Chinchama/ Imli : small marble sized.
** For Tempering/ Pannaka :
Oil/ Tel/ Tela : 1 tsp
Mustard Seeds/ Rai/ Sasam : 1 tsp
Curry leaves/ Kadipatta/ Karbevu : 8-10
** Cut of both side edges of cluster beans and cut into pieces of about 2 inches in size. Put it in a colander and rinse well under running water.
** Peel off the skin of potatoes and cut them pieces of about 2 inch sized cubes. Put them also in a colander and rinse well under running water.
** In a pressure cooker pan add in the cluster beans pieces in a layer and then top it with the potato pieces in a layer. Add ½ to 1 cup of water and pressure cook on medium heat to one whistle only. Keep aside for 5 minutes only and then with the help of tongs gently release the pressure from cooker, open the lid gently and let cool a bit.
** Note : I use above mentioned method for cooking veggies as cluster beans otherwise takes some time and I am always in a hurry. You can always use cooking in vessel method too if not sure of the pressure releasing method from cooker. Whichever method you follow remember to not overcook veggies for best results.
** For Masala to be Ground : Roast jeera for a minute on hot tava and then add it into a mixer grinder along with coconut, red chillies and tamarind. Grind to a very smooth paste with little bit of water, remove and keep it aside ready.
** In a large stainless steel vessel add the cooked cluster beans and potatoes along with the ground masala. Add in water to bring it to a thick gravy consistency. Do not add extra water or thin out the curry too much. Add salt to taste and bring it to boil on medium flame and then simmer on low heat for 5 minutes only, do not overcook the curry.
** For Tempering/ Seasoning/ Pannaka : Heat oil in a small pan, when hot add mustard seeds, when they begin to splutter add curry leaves, fry for a few seconds and then pour it over curry and mix well. Remove curry from heat, cover and keep it aside for about 15 minutes for flavors to seep in and it is ready to be served.
** “Mitkesanga Batate Gashi/ Cluster Beans Potato Curry” is done and ready to be served. Though this curry is usually served with rice in most homes, it taste great served with roti/ chapatti/ parathas too. Gashi is a curry prepared to be served almost at all types of functions as traditionally in GSB Konkani Saraswat homes garlic and onions are not consumed on festive days. Again for fasting days too gashi is a dish that comes in handy when you want to follow “NO Onion- Garlic- Rice pattern of meals". Today is Kartika Krishna Paksha Ekadashi and in my home we observe fast, so I served this curry with nachani methi parathas and it was awesome.
