Kishile Harve Kele Upkari (Grated Raw Banana Bhaji/ Stir Fry).

“Kishile Harve Kele Upkari (Grated Raw Banana Bhaji/ Stir Fry)” served with Poori and Mosambi Juice … Have you ever wondered why some dishes when mentioned just brings them together in combo with the other, for eg. mention bibbe upkari (cashew nut bhaji) and instantly poori comes in mind, they taste so delicious when served together … sometimes it is not the taste of individual dishes but when they gel well with each other that the taste of the meal get’s enhanced taking it altogether to another level … here is another hit combo, a simple raw banana bhaji which tastes best served with hot puffed poories … my Saturday lunch is always simple and it could not have been better than this … Yummilicious ….

** Yes, as mentioned in the title I am sure each one of you have your own combos when it comes to serving of dishes, we just can’t think of it the other way, can we? Though there can be otherwise combinations too, we simple love them in some particular way. I have always served kele upkari (raw banan bhaji when cut into half inch sized cubes as a side dish with dal- chawal and when prepared grated with poori, off course it tastes great with roti, but then poori is my favorite and trust me when served all puffed and hot there is nothing like it.

** Saturday meals are always NO Onion- Garlic- Rice and I always try to include dishes that are tummy satisfactory so as to get a feeling of satisfaction without the brain playing games as if it is not fed, oh, yes, that is what happens. When we are on a diet it is actually not the stomach but the brain that plays spoilsport with us making us feel as though we are starving despite having eaten light meals. Well, this was one recipe I again learnt after my marriage as here the raw banana is grated for preparing the dish while rest of the method too is very simple.

** I must mention here that, it had been quite sometime since I prepared this dish and remembered it only when I browsed through my old diaries. Just being inquisitive I searched through net for similar dish and came across quite a few some of who had cooked the raw banana and then grated etc. found them all interesting and sure to try them too, however this time I decided to stick to my own recipe as I had not yet blogged it and if you read through my old posts, I did mention I need to blog all the recipes jotted in my diaries, 7 of them to be precise.

** Have I bored you? Well, then let’s move on recipe without wasting time, though I always love to chat, I guess rest I will leave for coming posts. But, yes, do try this one out and use the raw bananas which is used for cooking, I have enclosed a picture of the same above, to avoid confusion. I am not sure if other variety raw bananas can be used as to be frank, I have not and would not like to say otherwise. However, if you have used in preparing curries then I guess it should be fine to do so here too, so just go for it, no harm in trying out.

** Here is my recipe for “Kishile Harve Kele Upkari (Grated Raw Banana Bhaji/ Stir Fry)” … do try it out and serve it with poori for best taste ...

** Wash and wipe dry about 3 large sized Harve Kele/ Raw Banana (used for cooking). Slice off thinly the outer skin portion, a little bit of the inner side of the skin if left on it fine, it does not matter. Now grate the bananas on a grate with large sized hole and immediately put them in water and mix well. Keep aside for 10-15 minutes after which put it into a stainless steel colander and keep it aside shaking it a few times to let the excess water drain off.

** Note : The water should be drained off completely, almost 90% as still thete will be enough moister within for the grates to get cooked. If not able to do so in colander, spread it on a plain cloth for few minutes.

** Heat 3-4 tblsp oil/tel/tela in a thick bottomed pan, when hot lower heat to medium, add 1 tblsp of urad dal (black gram dal), when color changes add ½ tsp of mustard seeds (sasam/ rai), ½ tsp of jeera (cumin seeds), ¼ tsp of methi (fenugreek) seeds and fry, when mustard splutters add 4-5 dry red chillies (byadgi mirch) cut to pieces, 8-10 curry leaves (kadipatta/ karbev), ½ tsp of hing (asafoetida) powder, ½ tsp of haldi (turmeric) powder and fry for second.

** Now lower the heat to minimum, add in prepared and kept drained raw banana gratings and mix well. Cover and cook for a minute or two, DO NOT ADD WATER. Add salt (namak/ meeta) to taste, mix well, once again cover and cook on low heat for a few minutes till done stirring in a few times to avoid getting stuck to bottom. Lastly add in 3-4 tblsp of freshly grated coconut (soyi/ nariyal), mix well, cook for just a minute and remove from heat.

** Note : The raw banana cook really fast when grating method is used. Again, as they are soaked in water they soak in some water, so there is absolutely no need of addition of water while cooking which will turn them into mushy/ soft which is not very tasty to savor. I must mention here that this bhaji tastes best when cooked in sufficient oil, however it is individual choice, you can cut down on oil if desired and use non-stick ware for cooking (I do not).

** “Kishile Harve Kele Upkari (Grated Raw Banana Bhaji/ Stir Fry)” is done and ready to be served. Tastes best served hot with puffed poori which is one of the best combo to serve this bhaji, though you can serve it with roti/ chapati or parathas too. A simple nevertheless tasty and healthy side dish that you must include in your diet. Raw bananas are one of the healthiest veggie which we need to make a habit of including often into our lifestyle in different ways.

** Do try out this simple and delicious dish and enjoy with your family and friends. Veggies should always be made part of our every meal to reap in health benefits. Health habits formed in younger days run a long way, so make it a point to feed right meals to your growing children which they will again continue to do so for lifetime, there by continuing the chain of eating healthy for generations to come.
