Harve Kele Morkolumbo (Sasam)/ Raw Banana Curry with Curds.

“Harve Kele Morkolumbo (Sasam)/ Raw Banana Curry With Curds” … A delicious curry from southern parts of India prepared with veggies to which ground masala and curds or buttermilk are added on .... tastes best served with plane or mildly spiced rice or with moong dal- rice khichidi … Yummilicious ….

** Morkolumbo is a curd based curry dish also known as Sasam in some regions in Southern parts of India. This dish can be prepared with any veggie though in Saraswat Community it is more so prepared using bhendi (lady’s Finger) or kuvale (ash gourd). The curry is thick in texture with addition of beaten curds at final stage and is served immediately as it does not have a good storing life and I would not recommend keeping in fridge as it really does loose on taste.

** I have shared a few more recipes before though not much as somehow I forget about this dish completely though we love to have it with rice or moong dal-rice khichidi. Sharing a common link below through which you may browse through for more options and details about the curry which is written more elsewhere. Do try this out and enjoy with family and friends, raw bananas are really good for health and you must include them in some form in your diet.

** Here is my simple recipe for “Harve Kele Morkolumbo (Sasam)/ Raw Banana Curry With Curds” … my style, do give it a try …

** I have used about 2 medium sized harve kele/ raw banana/ kacha kela here. Slice off the outer skin of the raw bananas as thinly as possible, you may use the string method or the slicing method or any other that you usually follow. Cut them lengthwise into 4 pieces and then horizontally into ½ to ¾ inch sized cubes. Put them immediately into water to avoid dis-colorization which bananas which happens often if left open.

** Add the cut banana pieces into a vessel along with water say about an inch above the level of the same. Add in 1 tsp of salt (namak/ meeta) and 1 tsp of chilly powder (mirsange pitti/ mirchi powder), ¼ tsp of haldi powder (turmeric powder) and bring to boil. Once it comes to boil, lower heat to medium and cook till 80% done. Keep stirring gently a few times for the banana to get evenly cooked and to avoid it getting overcooked

** Heat ½ tsp oil in a small pan, add in 1 tsp of jeera (cumin seeds), 4-5 green chillies (tarni mirsanga/ hari mirchi), ½ tsp hing (asfoetida) powder and fry for a few minutes. Add in ½ - ¾ cup of freshly grated coconut (soyi/ nariyal) and fry for just a few seconds. Remove and grind it in a mixer grinder to a fine paste with a little bit of water. Do not add in more water, remove, add to the cooked bananas, mix well and bring to a boil stirring gently.

** Beat one cup of thick curds (dahi) to smooth consistency, add to curry and mix well. Check salt, add if necessary and cook on low to medium heat till done stirring often gently. Do not overcook or boil on high heat lest the curry gets curdled. Also, do not add curds as it is without beating it evenly which will also cause the curry to get curdled. Remove from fire and keep it aside covered as we go ahead to prepare for seasoning

** For Tempering/ Seasoning : Heat 1 tsp of coconut oil (narlel tela/ nariyal tel), when hot add in ½ tsp of mustard seeds (sasam/ rai), pinch of methi seeds (fenugreek), 8-10 fresh curry leaves (kadipatta/ karbevu) and fry for a few seconds. You can also add in 1-2 broken pieces of dry red chillies (laal mirchi/ sukki mirsanga) if desired, I have not added. Remove,  pour over curry, cover and keep it aside for 15-20 minutes for flavours to seep in.

** Note : You can use any edible oil, I use coconut oil for certain types of dishes for added on flavor, it makes the dish tastier. You may use any of your choice.

** “Harve Kele Morkolumbo (Sasam)/ Raw Banana Curry With Curds” is done and ready to be served. Reheating is not recommended as the dish loses on taste or may curdle, so always prepare and serve it fresh to relish the delicious taste. In my home we either serve it with rice or moong dal- rice khichidi. Do try this delicious dish out and enjoy with your family and friends, I am sure they will all love it very much.

** Check out the common link shared below for “Morkolumbo” recipes and try them out in leisure, there is more information included in them, which I avoided writing again here as I will only be repeating the same….
