Moong Dal Varna ~ 2.


"Moong Dal Varna ~ 2" ... A spicy moong dal prepared with spices and served during lunch/dinner ... This is specially prepared during sharaddha food prepared as a respect towards departed souls, though the same can be prepared on normal days too .... 

** I will not go into details about the shraddha dishes as it is very difficult to speak on a subject that I do not know much off. There are two to three types of method of preparing this Varna which is specially prepared for  many other occasion too. One I have posted before to which I will share the link before and this is the second method. A few more variations I will post as and when I prepare as we prepare them only during these periods in my home. 

** Here is the Method of preparing of "Moong Dal Varna~2" ..... 

** Wash 1 cup Moong dal and pressure cook with 2 cups of water to 2-3 whistles. Let the pressure drop on its own, then remove the dal in a vessel and churn well to a smooth paste. 

** To be ground : Grind 1 tblsp fresh coconut with 2-3 green chillies, 1 roasted red chilly, pinch of haldi / turmeric, 1 tblsp of jeera, 1 tblsp of rice soaked for 20 minutes and a small marble sized tamarind to a very fine paste. 

** Add the ground paste to the cooked dal along with 3-4 green chillies cut lengthwise into two. Mix well, add in water if necessary to bring to a thick dal consistency. Heat the dal on medium heat and bring it to boiling point. Lower the heat and cook for 5 minutes stirring often so that the dal does not get burnt at the bottom. Remove from heat and keep aside. 


** For Tempering : Heat 1 tsp oil in a small kadai, when hot add 1 tsp of mustard seeds, when it splutters, add ½ tsp hing powder and 8-10 curry leaves. Mix well and pour it over the curry. Cover the curry and keep it aside for 10-15 minutes for the flavors to seep in. 

** "Moong Dal Varna ~ 2" is done and ready to be served. This is a dal usually prepared in Konkani Saraswat homes during the ShraddHa period as one of the dish but is prepared on normal days too.
