Naivedyam : Sakkre Chibbada Yelu ghalnu (Sweetened Cardamom flavored Muskmelon/ Kharbooja/ Cantaloupe).

“Naivedyam: Sakkre Chibbada Yelu ghalnu (Sweetened Cardamom flavored Muskmelon/ Kharbooja/ Cantaloupe)” … usually harshala with sweetened coconut milk is a traditional GSB Konkani Saraswat dish prepared with chibbada in most homes … however, we love to relish it simply chilled with added on sugar and some cardamom flavor … you can relish it as it is, as a base for fruit salads, with addition of custard or topped with ice cream, they all taste great … above all it can be offered as a Naivedyam on auspicious days ... Amma used to prepare this often to be relished at mid morning during our childhood on vacation times … Yummilicious …

** Chibbada (Muskmelon/ Kharbooja/ Cantaloupe) is a sweet fruit with high water content. I have already written a little about this wonder fruit before in the blog along with a few more recipes like surnoli, bhakri, juice, etc. added on. I have also included the reason to not throw off the inner seeds which are a bomb of nutrients that can be prepared as tambuli/ juice etc.

** Most of the fruits tastes best eaten as they are fresh and juicy without bothering to prepare anything out of them and that’s truly the healthiest way to have them. However, man always desires to try out new things, be it in any field and that’s how fruits too came to being converted to juices, sorbets, ice creams, shakes, jams, preserves etc. the list is long indeed.

** In fact, some fruits are used in preparation of curries, desserts in different combinations. Well that’s innovation and our ancestors had plenty of fore thoughts too, they went a step ahead and tried sun- drying and salt preserving methods for storing and using fruits and veggies year round, the sole purpose of which was to curtail the shortage of food at times.

** There is sure to be more innovations on edible dishes and its quite interesting and useful to study, prepare and enjoy them with family and friends. There is plenty of info on chibbada on net, so I will not repeat it again here. There are a dishes shared in the blog to which I will just share a common link the bottom of this recipe, do try them in liesure, they are all tasty.

** Here is my simple and tasty recipe for “Naivedyam : Sakkre Chibbada Yelu ghalnu (Sweetened Cardamom flavored Muskmelon/ Kharbooja/ Cantaloupe)” … my amma's style, the way we relished through childhood …

** Recipe is simple, just wash chibbada (Muskmelon/ Kharbooja/ Cantaloupe) and wipe it dry. Now cut it horizontally into two pieces and remove the inner seeds. Do not discard them, you will find a few recipes in this blog on using them.

** Slice off the outer skin as thin as possible and then cut them into small sized pieces. Collect in a stainless steel box, add sugar (+/- depending upon sweetness of chibbada), cardamom powder and mix well slightly crushing the softer ones a little bit.

** Do not try to mash the whole fruit, just a few pieces, that’s all that needs to be mashed to keep the sugar when melted into thicker texture. Do not worry if the sugar has not melted, just store the container in fridge for a few hours or until chilled.

** Note : There is enough water content in the chibbada which will absorb the sugar and melt it on its own, a procedure it carries on well without the need of mixing much. You can also add jaggery/ gud powder instead of sugar if you want to avoid it.

** Note : Do not add any artificial flavor/ color to this dessert, it tastes best just sweetened as it is with cardamom flavor, also the addition of sugar is sort of a preservative which keeps it color intact, off course depending upon the color of chibbada used.

** “Naivedyam : Sakkre Chibbada Yelu ghalnu (Sweetened Cardamom flavored Muskmelon/ Kharbooja/ Cantaloupe)” is done and ready to be offered as prasadam to God if desired and there by distributed among family. This is a simple dessert that can be enjoyed as it is on holidays or on any day that your family wishes.

** Tastes great served as a dessert after meals or any time of the day. Children are sure to love it topped it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream with addition of chocolate sauce and a few nuts. You can mix some other fruits and serve it as a fruit salad too, all these are included in the blog before, so just browse through the common link shared below and enjoy a lovely summer vacation with yummy desserts.
