Dalimbe Saali Kashaya (Kashayam)/ Pomegranate Peel Spiced Tea.

“Dalimbe Saali Kashaya (Kashayam)/ Pomegranate Peel Spiced Tea” … do you chuck off dalimbe saali/ pomegranate peels ??? Plz. don't, there are plenty of items that can be tried out with this otherwise waste peels, be it in addition to cooking or as a beauty product ... during winter/ monsoon or when there are body chills, hot drinks are beneficial to warm up the body from cold winds … sip on to this simple homemade kashya with added benefits of dalimba/ pomegrante peel nutrients, a twist I added on to otherwise simple kashaya … Yummilicious …

** Kashaya is a sweet- spicy winter/ monsoon beverage that is sipped on hot to drive away that irritating cold, cough or sore throat as it produces heat within the body. I always use homemade Kashaya Pitto (Powder) which I stock in my fridge to be prepared as and when needed. There are many types of kashaya pitto/ powder that can be prepared, while some can be had everyday, a few are best consumed during winter/ monsoon or if you have cold, cough or sore throat only to avoid excess body heat.

** Pomegranate peels have immense health benefits that can be stored in powder form and used in beauty packs or in chutney, kadhi etc. However, I prefer to use peels that are just a few days old after all there is a limit to storing ingredients which either unnecessarily occupy space or are at times forgotten. That’s the very reason I decide long back to use ingredients immediately and finish it off as Blogging these days keeps me so busy that I hardly get time to go through the stock and I hate wasting food.

** Pomegranate is easily available all round the world almost throughout the year. But more so now as it’s in season. We get large sized pomegranates that have deep red outer skin and the seeds within are almost blood red. The next time you purchase them do not throw away the peels, they are excellent source of plenty of nutrients beneficial for health. You can just add a small piece to most of the dishes either while brewing or preparing masala like chutney etc. and reap in the benefits, isn’t that wonderful.

** To store Dalimbe saali/ Pomegranate peels, I Just collect the peels, remove inner white pith, spread them on a plate and leave to dry for 24- 36 hrs. Once it has dried well and there is no trace of wetness, I store it in an airtight container in fridge and finish it off as soon as possible. However, please avoid adding more peels while preparing any dishes, as there are chances it will turn slightly bitter in taste though edible. A little bit goes a long way, just use your judgment according to the quantity of the dishes.

** I will share a few links at the bottom of this recipe where in you will find recipes that include Kashaya and the pomegranate peels. You may browse through them and try it out in leisure. In case you have any query just leave a comment and I will help in whatever little way I can to the best of my knowledge. ** Here is my simple recipe for “Dalimbe Saali Kashaya (Kashayam)/ Pomegranate Peel Spiced Tea” .... try it, good for health …

** In a stainless steel vessel add 2-3 tsp Kashaya Pitto/ Kashaya Powder (recipe link shared at bottom of this recipe) along with 3-4 pieces of pomegranate peels/ dalimbe saali (about 2 inch x 2 inch size). Add 4 cups of water and bring to a rolling boil on medium heat, mix well, lower the heat and let simmer for 15 minutes.

** Once the Kashaya has simmer well and the quantity of the kashaya has decreased a little bit, say about 3 cups, add 2-3 tsp  jaggery  (godda pitti/ bella hudi) powder and continue to simmer until mixed well. Remove from heat, cover with a lid, let rest for 3-4 minutes after which you can strain it into individual cups for serving.

** Note : Kashaya is always prepared with addition of jaggery, however, you can add sugar instead of jaggery if desired too. But do remember that jaggery is a good source of iron and is better than sugar which just unwanted calories. Again, the quantity depends upon individual taste and can be increased/ decreased.

** “Dalimbe Saali Kashaya (Kashayam)/ Pomegranate Peel Spiced Tea” is done and ready to be served. Do prepare and sip on to kashayam steaming hot if you feel cold or have an irritation in throat instead of reaching out to medicine. Give it a try, who knows your throat my be cleared without needing any further treatment. In this fast pacing life of ours where we are always falling short of time, we need to make a little bit of ahead plannings so that we can enjoy a good and healthy lifestyle.
