Vanilla Milk Popsicles/ Doodh Candy.

“Vanilla Milk Popsicle/ Doodh Candy” … need I say more ?? … I have nostalgic memories of eagerly waiting for the tinkling bell of candy man during our summer vacations … we ran a hundred times to open the gates, strained our neck to see to the end of the road in anticipation of seeing him coming over pushing his cart … the candy man always came in time smiling with twinkling eyes in amusement at our eagerness … when we saw him, we ran back home to bring a vessel in which he could place the milk candy’s almost a dozen in number … these are small joys nevertheless precious moments that will always be missed by our generation for sure … prepared these in steel glasses to avoid plastic molds … after all what’s there in shape, it’s the taste that matter and I just could not wait to have a small bite before the click … enjoy these this summer to beat the heat, they are not only tasty but also very easy to prepare … Yummilicious …

** Everybody knows about ice candy/ Popsicle and sure to have relished them at some point of their lifetime and each one tries their own experiment of mix and match of ingredients. I myself have posted quite a few and sure to share more. There are so many varieties in which these can be prepared that one will be spoilt for choice.

** I have been missing simple doodh candy for decades now, somehow never got round to preparing it. However, last evening I had some leftover milk and during summer I have this habit of either having some juice or coolant mid morning. The thought of doodh candy crossed my mind and thought why not? I still had time to prepare it.

** Milk Popsicle is often referred as Paal Ice elsewhere too. These are easy to prepare as all the ingredients are easily available in our kitchen. You can thicken it using cornflour or condensed milk or prepare with addition of cream too. Well, plenty of choices, so go ahead and try a few of your own mix and match of your favorite flavors too.

** here is how I prepared “Vanilla Milk Popsicle/ Doodh Candy” … simple and easy ….

** Boil one large glass of milk/ doodh, remove and let it rest for 5 minutes. Add in 2- 3 tsps of skimmed milk powder/ doodha pitti and 2 tsp of sugar/ shakkar and mix well. Keep it aside to let cool to room temperature. When cooled add ½ tsp of vanilla essence and beat the mixture well for 2-3 minutes. This builds in a little bit of volume into the milk mixture and thickens it a little bit too.

** Note : I have used skimmed milk, the very reason why I have added skimmed milk powder. However you can use full fat milk too, in fact if you have young children at home do use it as it is good for growing children, I just wanted to avoid excess calories. Again, you can add corn flour or milkmaid for thickening the milk too.

** Now pour them in any ice candy/ Popsicle molds you desire or have at home. Somehow I felt reluctant to use the plastic molds of Popsicle I have this time, so here I have used small sized glasses and it always brightens my mood as this is how we prepared ice candy’s at home during childhood. But then, it’s individual choice, you can use any molds of your choice or that which you have too.

** For freezing method with steel glasses : You need to pour the prepared mixture into the glass and freeze for about 2 hours till they are slightly set. This enables it to hold the wooden stick when inserted in standing position without slanting or falling. Once this is done then leave it undisturbed until the doodh candy is well set and frozen, takes approximately 6 hours, but I kept it overnight, just check in between.

** If using the Popsicle mold then the above first setting time of 2 hours is not needed, just pour into them and place its cap which holds the Popsicle stick intact. Place it in freezer and freeze till done and its ready to be served.

** Prepare and keep these well in advance to be served as and when desired, they remain good for 3-4 days. Just rinse the glass under running water without allowing the water to touch the set doodh candy, you just need to wet the outside of the glass so that the doodh candy comes out intact easily in one go to be served. Place it on a small plate and serve to catch any droplets while relishing.

** That’s it “Vanilla Milk Popsicles/ Doodh Candy” is done and ready to be served. Any Ice Candy/ Popsicle is best served during hot season/ summer as that is when it is enjoyed the most. There is no age/ gender restrictions to relish any type of food especially when one’s heart desires to relish them, just go ahead and enjoy them with your family and friends, trust me even old aged love candy, my amma does.

** Just a little bit of caution to observe, If you come home from outside drained and hot from the outside heat, then do make yourself comfortable first for a good 30 mins. before have anything cold especially if they are chilled. This is to avoid sudden drop in temperature within the body which is best avoided. All said and done, do not worry much, enjoy life with these small pleasures that create memories in the long run.

** Here is a common link to all “Popsicle” recipes in the Blog, do try them out this summer …
