My Pejje Jevan-Thali 99.

My Pejje Jevan-Thali 99. ... Limbiya Kanchi (Brined Lemon), Kooka Upkari (Chinese Potato Bhaji), Hapolu-Piyava Kismuri (Crushed Chilly Papad-Onion Salad), Ukde SheetHa Peja (Red Boiled Rice Porridge / kanji / Gangi Oota) topped with homemade ghee" ... Love this simple lunch to beat the blues of winter ... Yummy Yumz ...

** Pejje Jevan Thali (combo meal), is a comfort food for many people specially south Indians and it relished almost everyday in some homes as mid meals and more so during during monsoon and winter. It spreads in warmth in the body and induces a good sleep when relished steaming hot if more so when a person is down with fever or cold and cough. Red boiled rice peja know as Ukde sheethache' pejja in Konkani, is considered to be very healthy option among porridge / peja / Kanj / Ganji oota, as it is prepared with unpolished rice, however you can prepare the same with any ordinary rice too. It is winter time now and the chills have set in making us feel cold during night time and nothing is more appealing to relish than hot rice porridge with a dash of fresh homemade ghee added on along with some spiced side dishes. Pickles are the most in demand dishes that are served along with peja be it spiced one or brined one like lemons ie limbiya kanchi. You can also serve it with chutney pitti, like garlic/loshne chutney or curry leaves /karbeva chutney too.

** We, Konkani Saraswat’s always love to serve food with verities of side dishes very much, so is the case even when it is simple pejje jevan. Love adding on a few side dishes and enjoy the meal in pleasure, though my most fav. Pejje jevan is with surmai (king fish) fries, today I could not find some so I prepared this Kismuri which is my next best option. Do try out this combo lunch if you like rice porridge and if don’t like it too do have it at times as it is very good for health. Will be adding many more varieties of pejje jevan that I relish at home during winter soon, so keep a keen watch on my blog and enjoy this meal till then. And yes, do remember to always serve the rice porridge / pejja steaming hot with a dollop of fresh homemade cow's ghee for added health benefits, Ayurveda gives in a lot of importance to ghee that is obtained from cow's milk, as it is loaded with good nutrients. I am sharing the recipe links to individual dishes separately as is my usual pattern, so do go through the link for the recipes and do try them out.
