Maa ki Saadi/ Ammale Kappada.

"Maa ki Saadi/ Ammale Kappada" .... a girl never buys her first saree/ kappada, its always her mothers saree that she wraps round her with that warmth of her love passing on ...

** Oh Yeah, that 7 yards of silk spun cloth with beautiful prints of gold, has always caught my fascination ... sigh, that lost innocence of childhood; I have nostalgic memories of growing up eyeing Amma's sarees which I wrapped round myself haphazardly, looking at myself in the 5 ft tall mirror, trying to figure out how she wore it??? Those beautiful prints with different sized borders on different textured materials always fascinated me ...

** I wanted to wear them all, her sarees, her gold ornaments, her accessories, everything Amma wore with so much poise ... I would wear those jhumkas, turn my head sideways to watch them dangle, bangles were far too large and literally fell off my hands; nail polish could be applied only during holidays as it was No-No in school, payal too was tried on holidays tightening the lose ends with thread ...

** Aaahhhaa, not to forget lipstick, this was something I always tried innocently, applying a little bit too loudly, corners imperfect and getting spankings for the same, the bindi was actually a perfect round of kumkum applied after first applying Vaseline and Amma taught me to do so, a perfect zero on my forehead ...

** Sandals and heels 5 times larger are something every girl tries walking with, even if it means tripping over and getting bruised; still it is a must. oh, yes the first saree I wore was Amma's, with her blouse, all rolled up and pinned up here and there for proper fitting, not an issue, I felt I looked lovely in Amma's saree, her accessories, her make up, Amma also rolled l my hair into a bun, with a few hairs dangling out ...

** I stood before the mirror and swirled round swinging the pallu, yep, the influence of old Hindi Cinema era of Madubala- Nargis black and white movies ... I was a keen observer and learned fast whatever Amma taught, those 7 yards of silk in the long run became a passion with a huge collection to date, which I still love to wrap round me ...

** Oh those 7 yards of silk that clings beautifully to the body; whatever shape it may be in, is a beautiful gift handed down generations.. I guess every girl likes to doll up and follow on her Amma's footsteps, be it dressing up or making a home of her own ... Amma's legacy always gets passed on with beautiful memories and the warmth of her love wrapped round like her saree, a few of which still are treasured in my wardrobe ....
