Magge Harshala / South Indian Cucumber Jaggery-Coconut Milk Dessert.

"Naivedyam : Maggeche Harshala with Poha / South Indian Cucumber is Jaggery-Coconut Milk Dessert served with Beaten Rice" ... on the auspicious occasion of Rama Navami sharing this with all my friends ... God Bless All ...  Stay Blessed Spread Happiness .....

** I have posted Harshala a sweet dessert prepared with coconut milk and jaggery and flavored with cardamom powder to which seasonal fruits are added a few time before. Though traditionally it was prepared using muskmelon/chibbada over years people have started using other fruits and at times certain veggies that can be savored without cooking too and prepare the same. In my home we love this dessert and I always make it a point to prepare this whenever I prepare coconut milk for other dishes by keeping aside a little bit for Harshala or I prepare it during festive times as it is very easy to prepare too. You can use readily available coconut milk too, but for those interested in preparing it at home, I am sharing the link at the bottom of this recipe and you may follow the same.

** When Megha posted this recipe using Magge/South Indian Cucumber it was new to me as I had never prepared with veggies before. She had however not added in coconut milk but mentioned it could be added. I was all for trying out this recipe with addition of coconut milk as Rama Navami was approaching and it fell in a gap of two days, so I needed to prepare something for Naivedyam on both days. Therefore, this one is done today and I must say it tastes great when relished with poha/beaten rice too. Addition of coconut milk is a choice and you can prepare it just without the same too, but I found it tastier with the addition of same. Easy to prepare and very delicious and healthy as cucumber is a coolant to the body and is advised to be consumed during summer by our ancestors.

** Thanks to my friend Megha Kamath Kudva for sharing this awesome recipe in my food group “Konkani Delicacies”. Megha has a Blog of her own by the name “Khanapoor.com” with many delicious recipes in them. This recipe can be prepared without coconut milk too, but I added on coconut milk and served with poha/beaten rice, Thanks Megha, it is simply superb and we loved it.

** Here is to the preparation of "Maggeche Harshala/South Indian Cucumber is Jaggery-Coconut Milk” … A Delicious Naivedyam /Dessert ..…

** Wash and wipe one medium sized Magge/South Indian Cucumber dry. Cut it lengthwise into 2 inch width slices, remove the inner seeds along with the soft flesh attached to it. Do not discard the seeds as they have coolant properties and can be prepared into tambuli if desired. I will share the link at the bottom of the recipe for the tambuli. You check on the same.

** Grate the inner edible flesh portion of the magge slices and discard the outer skin portion. Put the grated magge in a bowl. You should have about 4-5 cups which serves for about 4 people.

** Now add in about 150-200 gms of grated gud / jaggery / goda along with about 1 full cup of thick coconut milk and mix well till the jaggery melt. You can use a blender or beater for the same. Add this to the grated magge along with ½ tsp of cardamom powder and mix well.

** Check the thickness and if you find that the harshala is too thick you can add in some water and mix well. Keep the prepared harshala in the fridge to get chilled as it tastes best when served cold along with some thin textured poha/beaten rice.

** "Maggeche Harshala/South Indian Cucumber is Jaggery-Coconut Milk” is done and ready to be served. If you have prepared this for Naivedyam / Prasadam like I did, in that case, offer the same to God first and then serve it to your family and friends in bowl topped with some Poha / Povu / Beaten Rice.

** Serving of poha/beaten rice is optional and the same if kept thick textured can be relished as it is, but we Konkani Saraswat’s relish this dish with some poha and it tastes awesome and is tummy filling too, also for generations now it has been a tradition of serving it with poha in GSB families. Do try out the combo.

** I served it in a bowl with some poha as we love munching on the crunchy poha. Again, do not add the poha / beaten rice beforehand. You need to serve them both separately and let the person relishing the dessert add it on herself/himself. As you all know that beaten rice turns soft soon and then it is sort of not great for relishing.

** My Tip : Do try out this dessert and enjoy with your family and friends. In case you are time bound do not prepare the same and keep in fridge prior by hours, it turns sour. In case of such problems do not worry, you can still try it out if you are using store bought coconut milk like me. Cut the fruits and add in jaggery water, mix well and keep it in the fridge. Keep a tetra pack of coconut milk without opening it into the fridge too. Just before serving remove both the fruits and coconut milk out, mix well and serve. Problem solved, Isn't it easy, no more excuses, go ahead and give it a try.

** Note : Be careful with addition of water, as you can add it later on too, we do not want the harshala / prepared mixture to become too thin in texture as it does not taste good then. Also the same should not be left at room temperature for more than an hour or so, as coconut milk here is not heated coz. of which it will get spoilt / sour if not kept in the fridge. Also never keep it near gas or anywhere where the temperature is hot.
