My Festive Thali 96.

"My Festive Thali 96 ... Gajar Raita (Carrot-Curd Salad), Kuvale Puli Koddel (Ash Gourd Curry), Kananga Podi (Sweet Potato Fries), Tomato Saaru (Saar), SheetHa (Rice), Chane Dali-Barik Lapsi Godi Khichidi (Chana Dal-Broken Wheat Sweet Pongal)" ... Today is a great day for us marking 3 festivals ... Sharing my Naivedyam on the festive occasion of "Mahalasa Narayani Shashti~ Manjeshwar Shashti~ Dahisar RatHa Saptami" ... Enjoy~Stay Blessed~ Spread Happiness .......

** Once again I present a simple festive Thali on the occasion of Maragashira Masa Shashti day. We Konkani Saraswats celebrate this day that falls somewhere in mid December almost in every temple as well as homes. In many of the South Indian Konkani Temples it is the starting of Car Festival time and is celebrated in great pomp. Many Konkani’s/Amchi settled all round the globe sometimes do make it a point to attend the same as it falls in December and is holiday times abroad or at least observe the same in their homes. In Mahalasa Naryani Temple, Mardol, Goa too, the Shashti day is observed and being my Kula Devi / Deity, we try our best to observe this day in our home by preparing some Naivedyam and offering it to God, if we are unable to attend the festival in Temples. It is an auspicious day in many temples including Manjeshwar a city in the Kerala-Karnataka state border at Ananteshwar Temple, which is a very holy temple for us Konkani Saraswat’s as it is our first temple that was founded and dates to about 400 years back. Again, car festival is celebrated in Dahisar Vittal Rakhumai Mandir, in Mumbai which we Mumbaikar's usually take part in too. Subramanya Shashti also falls on the same day, so does many other temple festivities.

** In all this day is very holy and pious for us Konkani Saraswats and is observed by most South Indian Konkani GSB’s wherever they might have settled later on in their life. I try my level best to do so as I believe in keeping our traditions live by celebrating the same in my own small way at home, by offering some Naivedyam to God in my own small God's Mandir/Mantap at home. I strongly believe in following at least little bit of traditions as if we do not do so, our coming generations will never know the importance of the traditions, culture, nor will they learn these things, and if at all that happens it is not they but we ourselves are to be blamed for not passing on the traditions. It is very important to continue doing so, if you do not want to loose your roots. During this holy day we amchies prepare many types of dishes though over time many of us being now nuclear families have cut down on the number of dishes, but the inclusion of kuvale / ash gourd  dish is a must, as a mark of respect to God and it has an lot of importance of its own, which maybe I will write sometime elsewhere as it is quite a long story and needs to be written in lot of explanatory matter which I am still collecting.

** However, during the festival of Shashti "Kuvale Sasam" a famous amchi dish is a must and is prepared in all temples and it is followed by many of us in our homes if we are unable to go to temple. The importance here is given to the veggie Kuvale ie Ash Gourd and a dish using the same  is supposed to be prepared. Kuvale Puli Koddel is another dish that can also be prepared on festive occasion and so I have included the same today in my festive thali.  This dish is served as a side dish along with Dalitoy or Saar with rice along with a few other dishes. Being Khichidi masa about which I have already written a lot before is also prepared as a sweet dish and offered as Naivedyam. My Mother loves this dish and always insists I prepare the same whenever she comes over to stay at my place. I am sharing the links to all the dishes in the festive thali as is my usual pattern and all you have to do is just click on that link of which recipe you want or desire to make. The recipe are given in details and so are the details about the same or its importance in our homes.
