Sutta Punnav / Rigupakarma.


Wishing all my friends a very Happy & Pious “Sutta Punnav / Narali Poornima / Onam" ... 


** “Sutta Punnav (Rigupakarma)” is celebrated by Konkani Saraswats by changing of the Sacred Thread / Jannave by the Male Brahmans of the community. The Jannave is a thin hand spun cotton thread worn across the chest and resting on one’s left shoulder. Wearing of the ‘Jannave’ for the first time after the munji / thread ceremony involves teaching the young boy the sacred Gayathri Mantra and providing a three-threaded Jannave. After the man is married, the three-threaded Jannave is replaced by a six-threaded one, symbolic of the additional responsibility ...

1.. “Sweet Kheer with Turmeric Leaves/Godi Kheeri Haldi Paan Ghalnu” … A delicious dessert prepared during festive times during monsoon season when plenty of haldi (turmeric) leaves are available and many a festivals that follow during that time …. Yumz …

2.. “Cheppi Kheeri With Haldi Paan / Bland Rice Kheeri Cooked in Coconut Milk with Turmeric Leaves” … This is a traditional GSB / Saraswat Konkani dish prepared during many festivals around rainy season when turmeric leaves are available in plenty. Legend has it saying that Goddess Parvathi prepared this with lots of love to Lord Shiva who relished this with great desire. So may be the other main ingredient in this dish is “cooking it with love”….

3. “Sweet Coconut Jaggery Rice / Sweet Narli Bhaat” … This is a Maharashtrian style delicacy prepared during auspicious functions specially during Narali Poornima ie Sutta Punnava (Rigupakarma) as coconut is the basic ingredient used during this festival … Tastes awesome …

4. “Seasoned Coconut~Sweet Corn Rice/Podnichi Nariyal Bhaat Jolu Ghalnu” ... a simple dish prepared on festive occasions along with sweet rice too as Naivedyam, the only twist I gave here was I added on some sweet corn kernels which are available in plenty now … This dish is simply delicious and can be relished any time of the day … Yummy Yummmmm ……
