Red Bean (Rajma/Tambdi Bee) Carrot Kismuri (Dry Curry).

“Red Bean~Carrot Dry Curry (Tambdi Bee~Gajar Kismuri)” … A delicious semi dry curry prepared with rajma bean along with carrots that goes very well with chapatti / roti / poori or even dosa … Yumz ….

** Kismuri is a traditional Konkani Saraswat dish that is semi dry and is usually served as a side dish along with Dal-Rice and other accompaniments. It is prepared with veggies specially bitter gourd, yam, spine gourd, beet, long yard beans etc. Today however I thought of giving it a change by preparing along with Red Bean. Yes, I added along with carrot red bean (Rajma/Tambdi Bee) and it tasted simply awesome. This dry dish is something I love very much as it is very tasty, so I try preparing it with various combinations. This one tasted wonderful, guess I will try it with other beans too and veggies in combo. I already have many combos cropping up in my mind and I am just waiting to try them out. Till then enjoy this one with your family and friends.

** I have made some changes in the original/traditional recipe this time and added on some ingredients both for the masala and for the tempering. I strongly believe that, one should always experiment in cooking methods and make changes while cooking. You should try out different recipes and bring in your own adaption’s keeping in mind your family preferences. Once you start doing so, you will start thinking out on more options and changes while cooking and that leads to new recipes/discoveries in kitchen. So never ever hesitate to try, if need be make in small portions and yes do jot down what you have done or else like me you may forget what it was that you added on. There is nothing more satisfying than when the dish you churned out changes awesome.

** Here is the Simple Recipe to “Red Bean~Carrot Dry Curry (Tambdi Bee(Rajma)~Gajar Kismuri)” … My Style ….

** Ingredients :
Red Bean / Rajam (Light colored) / Tamdi Bee : 2 cups.
Carrots / Gajjar : 2 large sized.
Salt to taste

** For Masala to be Ground :
Coconut : 1 heaped cup freshly grated.
Coriander seeds / Dhania / Kothimbir : 2 tsp
Kashmiri Red Chillies : 8-10
Tamarind / Chinchama / Imli : small marble sized.
Jeera / Cumin Seeds : ½ tsp (Optional)
Methi / Fenugreek Seeds : ¼ tsp
Fennel Seeds / Badisep / Saunf : ½ tsp
Oil : 1 tsp

** For Tempering:
Oil : 1 tsp
Urad Dal / Black Gram Dal : 1 tsp
Mustard Seeds : 1 tsp
Curry leaves : 8-10

** Red Bean / Rajam (Light colored) / Tambdi Bee should be washed and soaked in plenty of water overnight or at least for 8 hours till it have well swollen and doubled in sized. Rinse well and then add it into a pressure cooker pan with enough water, the level of the water should be about an inch above the level of the beans. Pressure cook on medium flame for 1 whistle, lower the heat and cook for 5 mins then raise the heat and after one whistle remove from fire.

** When cooled remove and strain off the excess water and put the beans aside to be used on later. You can use to prepare saar as we do not need to add it on in this recipe. If you do not want to make saar, just add in a little bit of salt, pepper powder, hing and boil it and relish it, it tastes delicious. Never throw away the cooked water.

** Peel off the skin off the carrots and cut them into medium sized cubes. Wash, drain off excess water and put it in a thick bottomed kadai. Add little bit of water say 2 tblsp and cook covered till done. Check in between and sprinkle some water if necessary. We need to only cook the carrots dry, so please do not add in excess water.

** For grinding masala : Heat oil in a small pan, when hot add in the coriander, jeera, fennel and methi seeds and fry for a few mins. Add in the red chillies and further fry for few seconds. Remove from fire. Add in freshly grated coconut and the fried ingredients along with tamarind into a mixer grinder and grind to a semi coarse paste with little water. The masala should be ground with very little water and should be dry in texture. Sort of crumbling texture. You can use the beans cooked water while grinding the masala too. Remove and keep this aside ready.

** Add in the cooked red beans and the ground masala to the carrots in the kadai along with salt to taste and mix well. Sprinkle water if needed only, the masala should not be thinned out as it should just about coat the red beans and carrots. Cook covered on low heat heat till well fried and done. Remember to keep stirring in between to avoid the masala getting burnt at the bottom.

** For Tempering : Heat oil in a small pan, when hot add in the urad dal, when the color changes slightly add in the mustard seeds, when they begin to splutter add in the curry leaves, fry for a few seconds and pour over the kismuri / dry curry. Cover and keep aside for 10-15 minutes for the flavors to seep in.

** “Red Bean~Carrot Dry Curry (Tambdi Bee~Gajar Kismuri)” is done and ready to be served. Serve hot with roti / chapatti or as a side dish with dal-chawal. A yummy dish when served with other dishes as a side dish too. I served this with Spicy Ajwain~Jeera Chapati (Roti), Curds, lemon pickle and Sun-Dried Wheat Shevai (Gonva Sevai Panna) and it tasted awesome. This was my satvik meal for today as it was Ekadashi.

** I am not into much making of any Upvas / Fasting as it effects my health, so I refrain from eating Non-Vegetarian and Rice dishes on these auspicious days, that's it and today was so too. Do try this simple combo dish and enjoy with your family and friends and remember to send me a feed back. I have posted all the links to all the dishes in the thali above in following posts.
