"Fried Urad Dal Gozzu / Chutney.

"Fried Urad Dal Gojju (Udiddu Bajjunu Gozzu) / Chutney" ... An awesome dish that goes well with Idly, Khotto, dosa, oondi etc. ...

** This is a simple side dish prepared and served along with Idly / khotto / dosa / oondi etc. Goes very when served and relished with these items for breakfast. Gozzu / Gojju is similar to chutney and is prepared with the addition of fried urad dal / black gram dal. Urad dal has a unique taste by itself and frying enhances the taste to another level altogether. When Ashamai posted this in my food group Konkani Delicacies today with Oondi, it appealed to me very much, it was posted early morning and today being Guru Poornima, I had already prepared Khotto (Idly steamed in Jackfruit leaves) for lunch along with sukke and coriander chutney. But since I had the khotto ready, I just thought why not give this dish a try today itself as the other things were already done and ready, that’s it, it was done in a jiffy and the aroma was awesome. We loved it with Khotto dunked in the gozzu. Yummy Yumz.

** The Recipe Credit goes to Asha Satish Philar mai ... who had posted this in my food group "Konkani Delicacies". Ashamai herself is a cooking expert and a renowned author of Saraswat Cookery Book... Thanks a lot mai ... we loved it, I served it with khotto and it tasted delicious ...

** I have not changed anything in this recipe and the recipe remains the same … Here is the Recipe for all of you who would love to try the same ……

** Add ½ tsp of coconut oil in a small pan and add in 2 heaped tablespoons of urad dal and fry till the color changes slightly, immediately add in 1tsp of mustard seeds and fry a bit then add in 4-5 byadgi red chillies (I added kashmiri red chillies as I did not have byadgi), ½ tsp of hing (asfoetida) powder, fry for a few seconds and remove from fire.

** Add the fried ingredients into a mixer grinder along with ½ to ¾ cup of freshly grated coconut and a small piece of tamarind and grind to a very fine paste with little bit of water. The ground gozzu should be smooth. Remove into a vessel and add in water to bring to a chutney consistency. Add salt to taste and mix well.

** For Tempering : Heat 1 tsp of coconut oil in a small pan, when hot add in ½ tsp of mustard seeds, when they begin to splutter add in 5-6 curry leaves and fry a bit and pour over the gozzu / gojju / chutney. Cover with a lid and leave aside for some time for the flavors to seep in.

** "Fried Urad Dal Gojju (Udiddu Bajjunu Gozzu) / Chutney" is done and ready to be served. Serve it with Khotto / Idly / dosa / Appo / oondi or any dish of your choice. This is a chutney sort of a dish that sometimes are named differently in other parts of Karnataka state. Do enjoy this with your family and friends, it tastes great.
